190d 2.5 non turbo auto 166k miles
moderately loud whine from somewhere rear

1. possibly worse on passenger side
2. on movement only, inc when in neutral
3. NOT worse with accel/heavy load
4. noticable when slow, possibly worse on over-run (ie when slowing down)
5. not a problem at high speed
6. Had jacked up on hoist, prop shaft, cv joints and wheel bearings seem ok, not really possible to locate noise or problem
7. moderate play in the whole drive train (say 15o slack)
8. changed diff oil but not difference
9. applying breaks makes no difference
10. no difference when cornering

otherwise car is A1

any suggestions?

Thank you out there

i surspect wheel bearings or dif wheel bearings dont allways make a noise when jacked up so best way to test is go round in tight circles in a car park so that one of the rear wheals is travling a long way and one is hardly moving try both ways and see if there is a difrence in the sound maybe get some in the back to listern for you when you are doing the test

I agree with worn diff. pinion/bevel. That's the reason for my question at post No.2. I suspect BB has only just got the car, whine wouldn't appear all of a sudden.

Good luck, but I think the 'pirouettes' in the car park superflous. Rear wheel bearings are parallel and will grumble just as much going straight ahead! (and I wouldn't even consider the likes of 'moly' or whatever in the diff - waste of money and effort).
Cheers, Tom.

Sounds like me to be the pinion bearing normally easy to replace by just dropping propshaft and unbolting the pinion housing, but on the 190 there is a taper roller bearing on the inside and the crown wheel must be taken out, so its off to the diff re builders.
