Hi all,

I’m well used to jacking up the car using the front central jack point and also the side skirt jack points, but I need to jack up the back in order to change the fuel filter (tried it with heavy duty trolley jack at the front but still not enough room to work under where the filter is at the back).

As far as I can see, the only possible option is the rear differential and I’d rather not do that (or is that quite a normal thing to do)?

Once the car is ‘up’, I can put stands at each side rear jack point (using the rubber adapters which I have).

What do other people do? Or don’t they?

Thanks

Ramps? I've a set of ramps that come in handy to get one end of a car up in the air. Not that I think I'd trust 40 Yr old ramp for my 2.2 tonne ML ....

Yeah, the ramps I’ve got are too narrow for the 225 tyres but I may have to invest in some wider ones.

It shouldn't matter if the ramps are slightly narrower than your tyres, just ensure that they are placed centrally on the tyre.

I believe that you can use the rear differential as a jacking point, but ensure that the front wheels are chocked (front and back) to prevent movement and that he car is on level ground.
Place axle stands to support the car, say on the rear jacking points, before working on the car.

Yeah, to me the rear differential is the obvious choice, but I’ve read conflicting information ranging from ‘it’s a big no no, will damage the diff’ to ‘its fine with a block of wood under it’.

I jacked up my son’s W213 using the standard jacking points with a hydraulic jack (with the proper adapter) and used axle stands under the rear subframe mounting point just behind either of the rear wheels I’m not happy about using the diff casing nowadays - the front central jacking point is easy to find

Thanks, I will look out for that as an axle stand point in future.

In the end, with my son helping, we changed the fuel filter by jacking up at the rear side and putting axle stands under the bottom ball Joint and one under the brake disk, with the wheel under the car as extra insurance and another hydraulic Jack under the front side jack point, to spread some of the load.

All worked well, albeit still a bit tight underneath! I’ve never really seen the point in a creeper trolley / dolly before, but I tell you, yesterday I was day dreaming about them each time I had to crab walk from under the car to get a different socket etc.

Might have to invest in one now I seem to be working on family members cars on a weekly basis (or I might make one), but that’s another thread!

Ps glad I’m not alone in not feeling happy using the diff to jack up.
