As Miffy, possibly a broken coil spring. Quite common on 203s. Ususally just the last coil, so sometimes hard to spot.

The car is rather too new to have sub frame bushes gone,,so as the others a spring,,but I thought that the MB techie would have picked that up

hi there,
i have checked shocks & mountings, tramp arms, exhaust hangers. i know the c180 has had front suspension issues as a common fault but this noise from the rear is ****** annoying, i dont know if the 2002 which i have has a rear problem aswell thats why im looking for any one who may have or knows about this issue..

rear springs breaking are very common on the w203 c-class. dad had one replaced on his c220 cdi at around 50k miles!

about £120 from memory. if your car has done a reasonable mileage (70k+) or you use rougher roads regularly (farm lanes etc) id consider replacing both as the car may not sit level. ours did as it had very few miles on at the time. it did go back under warranty for an unrelated job and they said the other had broken. dad bought a spring and said id fit this one. when i went to fit it, they were fine though, so he had a meeting with some of the management and returned the spring for refund. (they have bent over backwards to help me ever since!) just something to watch out for!

sounds like we were victim of the usual dealership sting then! the spring was around £50 at the time, but its a while ago, 4 years maybe!
