Rear Merc Badge Steal Attempt

Well nearly coming upto 3 years I've never had anyone attempt to damage my car, until last night.

Someone clearly has gone for the badge with keys, ruining the paintwork which was spotless in the process! Likewise going onto my drive to do it.

I'm now left with a badge bent in more places that you can imagine and ruined paintwork.

I presume I now have to add this to the service list of things that need doing. Anyone got any ideas for cost of replacement? And I presume touchup paint? Time it takes? (This is 03 C Class).

Thanks guys.

I am presuming it's the bootlid badge you mean. If it were me i would scour the breakers for a car of the same year and colour and buy the entire bootlid with an immaculate badge and paint. These can be found and i would say the cost should be no more than £80-100. If it's a bootlid you are after, there will be plenty of front end write off's around the country and some will be in your colour. Worth thinking about and swapping an entire bootlid, trim and all is much easier than messing around with touch-ups and new badges.
If it's the front end badge, again look at replacing the whole panel or wherever it sits, from a breakers yard. There is every chance you will find the part for less than you think.

best of luck.

The badge is around £5 or at least it was on the E class. The tricky bit is deciding what to do with the paintwork. Either chips away at around £70 or a full boot respray for around £150+ I suspect. Personally, I'd probably go the chips route if its just a few screwdriver scrapes. When the dealer resprayed the boot on the old E (warranty claim), they did the boot, rear wings and C pillars to blend it in which would obviously cost more that £150 but it did look good - depends on how bad though.

Hi pittallen

What about fitting security lighting around your driveway? Mine is fitted with an alarm that sounds inside the house. These simple precautions might deter the thief who is probably a youth with a badge fetish. Unfortunately, you are likely to be targeted again.

mini CCTV cameras are availabale on ebay for a few pounds, Ive got them in the Creche (Bike Garage lol)

After having my garage broken into and having nearly 20grands worth of bikes and tools stolen its a small price to pay.

Hi mercmonkey

I've been thinking seriously about getting a wireless+wired (Ethernet) IP camera for our porch/outside roadway; motorised, of course. I will have to considered infrared features too.

You, apparently, have some experience of these devices. What's their picture quality like? I could use one to keep an eye on my car and people who enter our premises.

Ebay is a cheap source of cameras and they look pretty good to me.

Hello,

Does anyone know how to fit a new boot badge, it looks like there are either three dowels (one on each spoke) or it's glued on?

I've got a service coming up so if it involves removing the boot door lining or drilling I think I'll let the garage fix it.

As you can probably guess some spotty chav tried to steel my boot badge last week and succeeded in scratching the paint and breaking off the 'circle' and leaving the spokes. I had a look into getting a PIR (Passive Infrared) camera but I think a big spotlight deterrent would be better with even a fake camera and a little LED+beeping sound should do the trick. But to be honest if you've got a garage use it - I wish I had...

The quality is pretty good, I have used the little wireless ones and the quality is good enough to secure a conviction :D (theivin tikes tried to steal my motorbikes) shame they didnt see the CCTV :)

I have mine wired to a timelapse VCR (again found on ebay for a few pounds)

heres the little setup I have:-

I dont reccomend running off batteries tho as they eat batteries.

Hope this helps

Im currently messing with a pair of day/night vision cameras with a dash mounted screen as a reversing aid
