Just picked up a 17 c250 amg line.

Its a lovely thing

After a string of modified cars I plan to keep this stock and just enjoy it. Already sits low on big wheels so looks the part and I'm.enjouing the peaceful but fast enough when needed driving style.

One thing I HAVE to change is the screwed on rear plate. I've never understood why even new Mercedes have 4 ugly uncovered screws where everyone else either uses stick pads or covered screws!

Anyway, what is the general approach? I notice the screw mounts are raised, so guess would need decent thickness pads to attach the plate.

What do others do? Any well tried and tested approaches to this?

Cheers

Wurth make the clip together number plate holders that Mercedes used to supply. They’re what I use

Cheers both. Didn't even consider them. Previous car was sticky pads all round which lasted 3 years and looked clean.

I like the one in the link- cheers.

I purchased these numberplate holders from Ebay. They screw into the original four holes but those screws are holding the framework of the plate holder. The numberplate simply slides into the holder and the top chrome strips is then pushed into retaining holes.

There are numerous coloured plate holders including black or chrome.

They are upside down, the thick part is supposed to go at the bottom

You can use sticky pads, they make 6mm thick ones., just stack them until you get the thickness you want

Thanks. It also seems the screws have melded to the threads in the boot - they just spin.

Personalsied plate going on in a month so will sort this then. Either holder or pads!

Only problem is if they are like the older type rivetnuts that stick out a lot from the boot lid you will need to clear the new plate holder where those ,,like yiou say ugly number plate holding nuts sit .

Do mind how you go about removing these rivnuts ,,you can damage the boot lid ,,I know i had a screw snap off inside one ,,doing what you are planing to do .But i thought never mind drill it out .The screws were made of brass ,well in my old W124 they are .So drill in hand i then started to drill out the old screw only for the drill bit to break off in there as well. I just cut a half moons in my new reg plate holder to clear all 4 of them . Reason they use thes rivnuts is that any lowlife who thinks of stealing your number plate will need to break it off and in doing so will rendering the plate uesless.

Think this means removing the inside boot cover to get purchase on the threads. Nightmare!!!!!

Could be they have used the wrong screws

Pretty sure the rivnuts on my R Class were ally .... those holding the chrome trim around the number plate definitely were. The original screws holding the plate were steel which were horrible & rusty. I picked up new screws from MB which were stainless ... the lad on the parts desk was to ashamed to charge me the £2 each, so gave them to me! :)

Hi JBell
The reason I put them that way round was that fitting them the other way obscured some writing on the actual numberplate, see the images from DreamerNo2, but thank you for pointing it out.

Emily your right about the rivenut being a type of alloy but my screws were brass .I have a smal draw full of them along with the screws i picked up off Ebay years back . The flat on them is to stop them turning in the boot lid ..And i have sent other members 4 in the past to replace theirs . See picture they do come in a few sizes for other model mb boot lids . Well thats not how i see it ,,these plates are original and came on my car when it was brand new back in 1989, so why on earth should i change them over now ? .. I would never buy a new car just to update my number plate like so many do just to keep up with the Joneses .
