From what I hear this is a common problem with the W140. The power window has not worked since I aquired this S280 two months ago. I can hear a motor sound and clicking when I try the switch, but there is absolutely no movement in the window. The window also slides down gradually over days, so I have to keep pulling it up and holding it with black tape inside.. Do I need a new motor (seen 'em on ebay for £30..) or is it just some bearing worn out?
Also the other windows are often sticky when coming up. That improves if you don't totally depress the switches when you use them. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Greg.

Dont think so Jib,,if the motor is going and the window drops that will be the lift mechanism and a common fault

Hi Malcolm,
Do I need a new lift mechanism or is there some way to fix the dodgy one I've got?

Its not worth trying to fix,, by all means take off the door card and have a look, they bend and a rivet fails and the teeth break off

Take off the door panel first, if you are unsure how to I can help you there

Hi Malcolm or anyone else who knows about power windows in the W140..
I finally bought the lift mechanism to replace my broken one. I decided to fit it today. I've taken off the rear n/s door card and pulled the motor free(the motor works perfectly by the way). The lift mechanism is held in place by what look like rivets. How on earth do I undo them? They can't be turned like screws. I've left the card off and come to my computer-does anyone know how to remove the old lift mechanism out there?..

Don’t know a W140 but how similar a set up is yours to this W202?
Rivets have to be drilled out and replaced with new ones by means of a rivet gun.
You will need to support the glass to prevent it drooping down when you remove the lifting mechanism from the door.

As Dec drill the heads off, a pop rivet gun does not cost much, if you need more info on removing the motor just ask

Hi Malcolm and happy birthday! It was your birthday yesterday wasn't it?
Thanks for the advice, stirling as always- and thanks Dec for the picture. The W140 mechanism is quite similar. After removing the rivets, is it possible to fix the new regulator in place with screws or bolts instead?

Yes indeed you can, but make sure that the screws do not foul the glass. there is always the danger that the screws can work loose, if you use self tapping, the holes will have to be opened up in the window mechanism as clearance holes for the screws

Thank you for the wishes:D

Dec and Malcolm!
I've just come in from the cold- I tried drilling through the rivet heads. (I've broken 3 bits too!..) The broader "head" of the rivet faces me while the thinner "tail" of the rivet points into the door cavity. They all have a soft centre, so I just drilled through that. I can't reach the tail of two of the rivets because my fingers can't get behind the panel. Unfortunately all the rivets are holding firm even after I've drilled through them. What do I do now??.. I wish I could fit a sledge hammer in the door panel and take a few swings...

when drilling out rivets, you use a drill almost the same size as the head of the rivet, you will find that the head of the rivet will pop off. Its impossible to drill through the center, and wrong as there is a hardened pin in the center.

So just drill off the large rivet head, put a screwdriver between the two pieces of metal and twist, and they will come apart. the piece of the rivet left behind can be pulled out with a pair of plies, or pushed through the hole

Greg, you might find this of some use, Yours may be broadly similar to it, it’s a how too on removing the rear window regulator on a W202, there is part of it in the DIY section but it was never completed due to my poor abilities with the web but I think I have it cracked now.

Hi Dec and Hi Malcom,
Thanks for your brilliant advice! I installed the new regulator earlier today- I'll hang the door card tomorrow as it's started to rain. It works a treat though- so I'm overjoyed. I replaced the rivets with short snub nosed screws and bolts to fit. I put glue in their threads first... I know that's unorthodox but I think it'll work:smile:

Merc S320, year 2000
Hello again all

As usual, I always use the forums for various bits and pieces and almost always find the answer, often without even asking the question! I have a window failure with the same fault as this thread and want to have nose in the workings, suspect lift mechanism, symptoms identical. But scared to death of playing with my beautiful, unmarked interior and leaving some damage or a mark that will bug me every time I get in the car! Thus, can anybody advise where the procedure for removing the door card on an S320 (2000 model) might be located on these forums? if at all? Yes, it's entirely possible I am being dense, but I've had a good look and can't find it! Thanks all ...
