what are the legalities of rear seat passengers in 1977 350 sl, be it a bit cramped and no belts ? thanks

You do have seat belt securing points built into the car

The cut off date when rear seat belts are required to be fitted is for vehicles first used after 31 March 1987, so, with a 1977 car, you don't need to fit seat belts, hence, you can't be compelled to use them.

If, however, you have them retro-fitted, you should use them.
