Rear vents in ML not blowing hot air

I have a 2004 ML 270CDI SE and the rear vents have never blown hot air since new,no matter how hot i set the temp to. I was unaware that the rear vents are actually capable of blowing hot and cold air until i was told by a garage. Now the warrenty is out im reluctant to get mercedes to take a look at this until i know what the problem is. I think you get 2 blowers each one activates depending the on what temp you have set but i think the hot air vent is failing to open, maybe the motor is faulty as it has never worked.

Any ideas?

Do you get any air blowing out of the vents at all. As there is a flap in the heater box that controls the air flow to the rear vents

Yes i do get air blowing out but only cold air, no matter what setting i put it on only cold air is blowing
