You do not need 5 litres unless you are going to spray the complete under side, the 1 litre tin at £9 will be enough for the arches and most of the rear underside

Hello there,

I'm having a local SMART repairer do the mod on my S class. He is taking the paint of at the minute. We had a look at the guttering and he can't understand why it needs to be rolled the other ray round before fitting. He has suggested we go ahead and do the mod with the guttering as it comes as he dosn't want to stop the guttering from fitting securely to the arch. Can anyone help me out with this?

Joseph

You can fit the guttering the as is way, but it will leave the upstanding lip on the out side, where as the other way it fit snug.

You and hardly see it anyway so not that important

We have three mercs all 1992, a190 auto 250d, 124 auto 250d,129sl auto fitted with 250d. We are lucky no signs of rust on front or rear wings, Rob parker three pointed parts bought our other 124 auto 250d 1992 for his Dad, there was no rust on the wings and it had done 380,000mls. Just luck I suppose, but that is why I will not buy a newer car. Hope this helps

Nope. ;)

As Madam is now asking when this damage can be repaired, can this part be obtained from a suppler ?. I have tryed Car Breakers sent pictures and so far they cannot be bothered. PS Madam argued with the Crash barrier at the Supermarket,Crash barrier won.

That area is double skinned, ..you may be able to bring some of it out from behind with the arch liner removed, but the area near the door will elude you.. This needs to be 'nailed' ..ie nail like pins welded to the deepest part of the dent and then pulled back to shape..You could also drill or punch a hole from behind and tease it out with a socket bar or similar.. the hole you have drilled can be treated and then a grommet used to plug it..

The 'drill a hole' technique really works, used many times, just push it out with screwdriver.

Hi Malcolm when you did this mod did you find that the wheel arch liner fitted back okay after fitting the edge strip - or perhaps you fitted the strip after replacing the arch liner?

I did not take them out Roger they are a poor fit with a large gap on the 230, this is a reason whey they fill up with mud, we also know that there is no paint at all in the lip, so every MB made up to around 2006 on, and a new model rust will form in these arches

Ah Thanks Malcolm, thought I was losing it :)

Is this the right trim to use :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLASSIC-M...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27c9d83961

That was the trim that I used, and that one should be turned inside out from it natural curve, there is another trim on there now that is a perfect U shape that does not turning , and much easier to use, its thicker but that does not matter, the main thing is not to use strip that has metal claws to hold it on.

I will try and find the version that is easy to use

Thanks Malcolm my reason for asking was that I removed both of mine the other day to check out the underside and the area described in your excellent remedial post.

I was quite surprised to note that the underside of the plastic arch was clear of muck or mud and just a coating of dust was evident, low and behold NO RUST on any of the panels or seams at all, just the brake pipe union on both sides.

However I did note that there is some (very) small areas of the lip you covered with the Mini plastic trim starting to bubble but still quite minor so best do a bit PPM thinks I.

The plastic wheel arch protector is a tight fit around the arch rim and clearly does the job it was intended to do so I reckon I will have to re-fit that first before I fit the 'Mini' trim.

Good point Roger, do waxoil the whole inside of the arch, wit the plastic trim on afterwards should help it all, just paint the waxoil all into the strip and that makes it easy to push on.

Nice to know that the arch is better on the 211, mine is much improved on the 216:D

R170 2002 4 wings

We had ours repaired at a body shop and the red matched up very well. To the point since then I have greased the inner ledges as the bodyshop said this was as good a way as any for keeping water out and preventing rust.

During the winter I will grease the inner ledges every 5-6 weeks. I suppose this is not as good as waxoil, but nevertheless a simple and cheap solution ?

Any comments ?
