We had ours repaired at a body shop and the red matched up very well. To the point since then I have greased the inner ledges as the bodyshop said this was as good a way as any for keeping water out and preventing rust.

During the winter I will grease the inner ledges every 5-6 weeks. I suppose this is not as good as waxoil, but nevertheless a simple and cheap solution ?

Any comments ?

Yes grease is not waterproof, it will absorb moisture, pleas note, it is the lip of the arch that needs the plastic trim as it is the edge where rust starts and from the factory just no top coats on the inner lip or edge.

Good work, I cleaned all the gunk out of mine the other day and currently waiting for some dry weather or a chance to get her in the garage to waxoyl the inside lip.

Great post, really concise, thank you I shall be following your advice!!

My father taught me to always start washing the car by starting with the lip around the wheel arch, that was 30 years ago!!!

tbh, I have been looking for an excuse to be "drooling" over the car.

Thanks again!!

So many of our cars have this problem that I thought that a little DIY that I have done could help others, even if you do not have rust, most of it can be kept in check with a simple mod that will be in part 2

Hi, TV

Please could you tell me what paint you are using is it rustoleum, also where could I source it. Thanks!!:)

Are there any chances of reviving the pics in the original post?

Made a start on the rear arches on my w209. Removing the arch liners was a pig but they had to be removed as there is no way I could scrape all the crud out (lots and I clean them out most weeks!) and there's no room to get behind the flange to treat its rear face with the liner in situ.
Took ages to clean to an acceptable level, then i treated with rust converter, twice, then three thick coats of Davids Zinc 182 on the inner face and over the edge of the flange. Made good use of a hairdryer to aid drying, then finally three or four coats of smooth hammerite, very messy stuff, but thats what's needed a thick gloop to encapsulate the metal from attack. One side done (the worse by far rear near side).
I was quite impressed when the arch liners was removed as other than the inner edge of the wheel arch, everywhere else was rust free (if we exclude the suspension arms etc. So not really bad at all for an eleven year old car (mid 04). What did look bad was the state of drive shafts out of the diff, my god they look bad, covered in rust is that normal? I'll add it to my list of 'to do' jobs!
The rear wheel arch liners go back in a lot easier than taking them out by the way. I'll try and grab some pics when I do the other side.

I have searched everywhere and I cannot find them.

What I will do is put some up over the next few weeks of the finished work and another part that I will be doing.
