My E Class (124) estates rear wiper when switched in to intermittent mode is fine for a few minutes but then (with a mind of its own) goes into a constant wipe mode and will not stop regardless of the position of the switch until the engine is off and it has had a chance to re-consider!  Is it the switch?

Rear wiper mind of its own

Hi Chris

I have had a few problems eminating from where the wiring loom travels through the tail gate and the body. The constant opening and shouting can break the wires. They may of cut through and touching on each other. Just a thought why it should change by itself.

Regards

Andy @ www.mercedesservicing.com

It could be that the relay contacts are burnt and sticking together after a few operations.  When left off for a while it unsticks and resets.

Chris.

Go with Andy's tip, anything hatch/estate seems to suffer in the manner he has described.
