Received recall letter today and looking into the experiences of others and recommendations I do not wish to get this done. However, as this recall now sits on the DVSA record would this mean car would fail next MOT.
I asked this question at a mercedes specialist a couple weeks ago and he said no it won’t make a difference

My 212 E350CDI & 172 SLC250d have both had it done during the last service.
Nothing seems to have changed in the 212. The 172 initially wouldn't go into 9th gear under 75mph, before it would at about 68mph. However 6 months later its now going into 9th at about 68mph.

this is a mixture to two separate issues…. (giving the benefit of the doubt that nothing deliberate was done during the design phase - which might be stretching things as the second issue clearly was "built in").

unfortunately NOX sensors fitted at build where too cheap and of a poor design - they have been playing up since 2016 with a number of software and part replacement programs in the background. It has not possible to resolve the issue due to the part quality issue. (As few dealers pay enough to have staff that can read, fewer provide the time to digest technical improvement programme documentation and then most manufacturers would rather garages didn't do work chargeable to them. Most people have been flying blind about this).

When these substandard parts have been replaced with the current specification updated sensors, and the car is running the current pre dieselgate fix software. The emission fix goes on without issue.

In a rather stupid oversight (I guess its come about because other regions had all recalled and replaced the NOX sensors ) the dieselgate fix has been causing a lot of UK customers issues with EML lights as it seems the old sensors do not suit the software package applied. Which would make perfect sense.... its not normal to provide backwards compatible software for faulty components

Where the garage is not totally underhand, and the car is within sensible mileage, and with a service history, the issues have been resolved free of charge. This has not been the case for a number of owners... Usually those who don't have their wits about them and are not close enough to where the worlds been going for the last 20 years

Hi all, long-time lurker first-time replier.
My recall was done in October, the engine warning light came on the following day, a few weeks later they had it back in and replaced one of the sensors FOC That lasted up until January, I had to get it booked into my local garage for an MOT and got them to put out the light before hand and the confirmed again that it was the NOX sensor again. Booked it in with Merc the following day and that led me to yesterday (as I needed to wait for a courtesy car so I could get to work) now they're telling me it's the other NOX sensor and it'll be over £500 to replace?
Anyone had any luck with Mercedes paying for a second NOX sensor?
I had zero issues before the recall and my car has just tipped the 100k (65 plate C300h)

Mercedes parts have a 2 year warranty on them so tell them to sort it FOC

Cheers but the dealer is saying it's the opposite box sensor now to the one they have already replaced?

I would argue the point that it makes no difference. If one sensor could be replaced FOC why shouldn't the other as they were clearly of the same batch.

I'd also ask why both sensors weren't replaced together.

Cheers, I suppose it wouldn't have been in fault at the time, but as we all know the perameters on the new software are different so it was only a matter of time before the second one failed.

Just thought I'd update you all, after a long process and going through the motor ombudsman, MB finally agreed to replace the other Nox sensor. I now have a fully working car with no lights on again.

Well done - I realise you had to hang on like a terrier to get it sorted.

MB or some of them - are really stupid the way they try to refute a firm case such as yours and one day they’ll realise they have no problem cases because they finally lost what little goodwill they had retained- and that will go hand in hand with declining sales !

Ah, good old Mercedes customer service. Only 3 or 4 months to get the right result.
Glad it's sorted in the end.

Received recall letter today and looking into the experiences of others and recommendations I do not wish to get this done. However, as this recall now sits on the DVSA record would this mean car would fail next MOT.

you do want to get it done - you just don't understand why - yet !

your car left the factory with two big flaws

a) illegal emissions (but it seems most diesel owners think they have a right to kill others, so let just park that one)
b) cheap faulty NOx sensors that fail and you need to replace them.

*you don't want the one's it had they were rubbish
** you don't want the Mk2 replacement sensors they were almost equally rubbish

so then they admitted to themselves - oh we better sort this mess out correctly... BUT they don't want you to not know they got things wrong and want you to pay for the fix....

then along came the illegal emission's scandal and it appears (either the rest of the world had their cars fixed in one well completed upgrade) or there are two illegal emission updates and they need to apply the correct fix depending on the mess the car is in.

The right way forward is to replace BOTH NOx sensors with the Mk3 iteration - but these require a number of software updates and the two sensors. If you have full main dealer service history - then you ought to go prepared to get them to do this work at no cost to yourself

the first software update enables the Merc parts system to display that your car should now be on Mk3 NOx sensors
then they apply two other software updates allowing the SCR (ad blue system) and the DPF (particulate filter) to operate correctly, and fit the legal engine map

done well it becomes legal to use on public roads in the UK and Europe (at the moment its NOT !!!) it will drive better, lasts longer and will cost you much less in expensive emission related failures (like replacing the DPF) because its regen never really worked since it left the factory !!!!
