Just reading the other brake pad post on here about the brake wear sensor being on the front drivers side wheel, I had the front driver side tyre changed about a week before I got the brake wear warning, any chance the tyre fitter damaged the sensor?

It is possible and any decent garage will tell you if the pads need changing. If the sensor is damage they will just replace the sensor.
You dont need a specialist garage for brake work that you describe. Perhaps use google reviews to help find a well reviewed garage for the job.

brake wear sensors will generally trigger the light/message with hundreds of miles left on the pads. Have a look at the remaining pad material, there'll probably be plenty enough life left to wait for your indie to come back off holiday.

Update, bit the bullet and removed offside front wheel, all looks good, sensor wires in place, lots of meat on the pads, sure my indie did this when he changed the seized piston on that wheel. Now as there are only two sensors, one front and one back both offside logic dictates to get an alarm it must be the rear offside which I will remove after a cup of tea. On the other hand t would be better to have rear pads with senor ready to fit or will be doing the job twice, so next question, best value for money make of pads to get?

That's a good price. MB wanted around £100 for the front pads on my R Class and something like £150 for the rears.

Looked on google first but every time there was a set with one wear sensor it said it was for cars with sport pack which is not me, asked Grangemouth and mine does have one rear wear sensor on the right side so I know it's going to fit.

Update, got the pads and sensor this morning, chocked the front wheels, opened the barake fluid cover and paced rag, trolly jack onder axle and jack at side brake point. Took off off side wheel and no sensor!, removed brake pads, inside one not very worn and outside about half worn, had to use a lot of force to push the rotors back, not just scewdriver job. All done did the nearside, much easier no sensor here but not supposed to be. pads both only about half worn, checked brake reservoir no spill and looked full. Started up moved down the drive to check, stopped ok but pedal felt spongy and wear alarm still showing.
Grangemouth said there were sensors front and rear off side but the pads supplied had no space for sensor and none on the removed pads, there is not supposed to be a sensor on the front nearside but that is the only one I have not had off, now puzzled

Looking on internet found one report from a guy who had a 220 CLK sport that only had one wear sensor front offside, will take off front offside again and check resistance of sensor or replace it with the spare one I now have

Update on the update, looks like my original thought was correct, the tyre fitter must have bent the wear sensor when he changed the front off side tyre, if I had known that this model clk has only one wear sensor I would not have turned my attention to the rear brake pads. When I pulled the senor out it was bent at almost 45 deg, I did not disturb it the first time I looked just checked the wires were ok and not cut, at least I had a new sensor that I bought with the rear pads and having to work the piston in the offside rear may have saved it from seizing as it was very stiff and the rears have nice new pads so not all bad.
