just got back from a sunny place. But before i went i recorded 37.3 mpg in my slk 200k 170. I covered 360 miles and came back with that average after brimming the tank. Previously managed 36.6 mpg. I am now after the 40. Both these recordings i have been stuck in some traffic too, so it is possible to increase!

It must be Malc. I think 36-37mpg is more of an average Mileage from 200 or 230 engines.

Last weekend, travelling primarily around 85mph, but with a few road works at 60mph, the occasional burst of speed to 140mph (to avoid idiots) and a 6 mile jam, I obtained 25.8mpg (was in the 26's but dropped due to the jam), backed up with fuel receipts before and at end of journey (256miles) in the ML500. I have photo's, so perhaps Ill start a 500 mpg thread, but for the size of engine and vehicle, travelling from Salzburg to Stuttgart (imagine M62 Leeds->Manchester but with higher hill climbs and bends), its pretty good and the car is amazing me how economical it can be if you dont boy-racer it.

I doubt if my 1994 SL 500 is any more economical than that. Given the extra weight of the ML, and the aerodynamics, your data is a real result and evidence of how much more efficient the 500 engine has become because of continuous improvement over the years.

It has often been said Alex that the 119 engine was more economical than the twin spark 113 engine in mine. In 2006 this was dropped and they went back to the single spark

Is it possible I have been going faster than I thought? Dear me.

I'll stick up the receipts and photos of the mpg indicator this weekend, in general the 500 has very much impressed me.

If you use it for day to day driving to work, the figures are not so good, but used for the purpose I bought it, going up and down mountains or cruising autobahns, its proving better than Id hoped.

Over 1300miles of various driving including a few weeks of daily commute etc, its 21.9, so still not too bad, but after this week I hopefully wont be using it for daily commutes!

Wonder why twin spark is less economical? Also, I want eventually to updgrade to the 550 which uses the 24Valve engine and it is even more economical!

The BHP has increased from 308 to about 375 so quite a boost with a better torque figure as well

Just to add to my earlier post, below are the pictures of the tank-tank receipts and the trip computer 10 miles away from my home.

Between the 2 locations, according to Google, it is 357km, which at 1.62Km per mile and 4.54 litres per gallon, 40.3l = 24.9mpg at generally 85mph albeit there are a lot of roadworks, holiday traffic and jams at the moment which brought the average speed and economy down (an idling 500 is not very economical). The remaining 45 miles were on A-roads and the economy was up in the high 26's before the jams etc!

So, the trip meter is pretty much spot on and the 500 is way more economical than competitors petrol 4x4's from what Ive seen/read, so pretty impressive. Would like to hear from 350 or 320/420cdi ML owners as to there economy.

Could get my 4.4i X5 to 30mpg when doing 60mph on a flat mway. A gentle run would yield 27mpg+ but around town and being spirited (4 exhausts and a V8 are a nice sound) it would be a car that would get teens or single digits.

However, on a commute to work and the first 7 miles my car wasn't even warmed up I got this
