Noticed smoke from exhaust, closer inspection shows red oil leaking from undertray onto exhaust. Enough oil to cover undertray.

Car is '94 220CE and was in for a service last week with gear oil change. I'm assuming this is gear oil that is leaking so question is do I risk damaging the transmission by driving it (I have a 100 mile journey home tomorrow)?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers,
JB

Was it serviced by MB? If it was, you could take it to a local MB garage and let them have a look.
I dont think I would be happy driving 100 miles with a big gearbox leak. What about breakdown cover? Tell them your gearbox isnt working, they should recover you.

I think that you must take it back to who ever did the job, if the firm is 100 miles away ring them and tell them.

Thanks. Is there a way I can measure the transmission oil level? I can't find any mention of a dipstick in the owners manual.

Got car back from garage today. The previous garage who did the service had overtightened the oil pan cover causing damage to the gasket and sump, hence the leak. Thanks for the advice not to drive it - that proved right in the end.

Well done, Malcolm

that's a first class link you've posted! It has invaluable exploded views of car assemblies. Keep up the good work
