Indeed you do just push the pedal, and away you go,,if you are starting on a hill, and the gear selector button is pressed in the W mode, the car will not roll back with your foot off the brake.

The best tip that I can give you is to forget that you have a left leg, until you have driven it a few thousand miles

W? S? Cruise control? Someone must have broken into my car and stolen all of those from my auto 'box!!!

I am lost too, I haven't noticed a W or S either

I just keep my car in D the whole time I am driving

We have cruise control and tiptronic too but the only time I have found either of them was when I was trying and failing to move the car in the drive last week :D

This may explain why "one lady owner" is such an attractive sales pitch? Many parts of the car have never been discovered and are therefore unused?

After much thought I have come to the conclusion that W & S stand for Winter and Summer as I can't think of anything else they could stand for :p

Ah yes Lyn, but which will you use, and when?

Hmmmm well I can't see why you'd need a Summer one to be honest.

Now Winter, well I guess when it's icy or has snowed you might want to put it into W. Maybe it changes the way the car holds the road

Absolutely correct. W on your gearbox (or E on others where the choice is E & S) will cause the car to set off in 2nd gear and the gear changes will happen at lower revs, reducing the risk of wheel spin.

I tend to keep mine in the S setting throughout, not because I am a hooligan, but because it enables me to use extra revs if I want (overtaking for example) without any embarrassing automatic gear changes during the process and yet I can change up a gear at any time just by easing pressure on the throttle.

I have tried each mode over considerable distances, and my choice has no adverse effect on fuel consumption.

Some folks, especially with the more powerful engines, prefer the W (C) mode all the year round as, with their extra torque, it gives them a smoother take off.

I, on the other hand, am smooth anyway!

You can improve road holding, for example through z bends or on a rural road, by using tiptronic on your car to select a lower gear (e.g. 3rd on your 5 speed gearbox) and you will find that this does make the car "sit down nicely" and cling to the road better. It also uses slightly higher revs (and probably more fuel), so as a Scotsman that would bring me out in a rash - but it is good practice.

That's what we all need - more practice.
