likely hydraulic , they can rattle a bit on a worn/high miles motor or one suffered from irregular oil changes, not normally too complex to change, twas me i would run a manual oil press test if good spend/ change tappets,if no good resolve that first.

I don't know if most cars have hydraulic cam followers. Its expensive.

These days good materials and accurate machining mean they don't move much and bucket and shim is much cheaper and more reliable - although ought to be checked now and then. Being a car I expect no one cares. Bikes are mainly bucket and shim and 18k miles is usual check but few need doing, even fewer are checked

Generally if hydraulic tappets are noisy only one or two start to tap. If it's more than that check for oil pressure issues.

as above but not much point in changing two.. if 2 worn rest close behind. does noise go if you give it a bit of the boot, ? then come back straight away, or not go at all? frankly i have 1 or 2 tap away at times when i fire up my W208 but its not run often, oil press v good and tap goes away after a few min, as its spare car i dont worry about it . a bit of boot when warm its gone, till next time.

I would do an oil change with a quality flush additive - liquid moly pro line and use a quality oil if you are sure its the tappets as a first.

The tappets will be hydraulic. Most cars changed to Hydraulic in the late 80's

I was in GSF a few months ago as I needed some feeler gagues to adjust some tappets on a few mower engines. The saleperson said what do you for a living as he hadnt sold set for years.

Just remove the valve cover and see if the hydraulic tappets move one at a time .There is a way to check them on older type engines might work for yours,, you use a hammer --no you dont knock hell out of it just yet. You push down on each cam follower just above the tappet useing the handle of the hammer, to see if the tappet has bleed out of oil .In side each tappet is a spring and a steel ball bearing. After time the spring wears out, and oil is drained out, therefore you get the tick tick tick . What you could try is a bottle of engine flush with your next oil change . If tappets are gummed up it will clean out the oilways, so the oil can do its job and get rid of the noise. But there again if your car has had regular services, then i dont think the tappets will be gummed up.

Yes one way valve type . No oil in them you get tick tick you will need to check them before going on .
Thank you.
Would using a thicker oil so that it does not drain past the steel ball, also be a solution to this??

Matt worth a try . Check what oil you can be use in the engine . Too thick and it wont lubricate the vital small oil ways. Might have the wrong oil to start with .But you do get strange noises with diesels of any type.

Well you choose a good oil manufacturer on the web site put your reg number in the box then see whats going for your engine .I checked on the shell web site

Shell Helix cct 5w30 but also 0W30
Castrol web site are asking for reg number so pop over - Google Castrol and search oil for my car . Lots use Castrol Edge .But make sure it for diesel .
