I thought there is an interchangeable clip on the side on the COMAND unit that sets the giro angle correctly for the car it's in.

That is correct. The colour clip is model dependant. They are listed on: http://www.mercupgrades.com/comand+retrofit-article-1.html

You also need the correct unit for your car, there are canbus and non-canbus units.
