I have a problem with my spare key - the remote is not working. I have changed the battery but it still deosn't work. I guess it may need to be reprogrammed to the car? If so can I do this myself??;-)

It is a 99 ML320 - The key looks like brand new and fits the locks etc. I was hoping I could press some buttons or something and make it work!

If not can I order a new one using serial numbers or something? If so what information will I need? Cheers.

Maybe it can be taken to pieces and fixed, see Anywebs excellent DIY

You can test the IR part with a digital camera

Just been looking at my key and I dont think it has got Infra Red? I cant see anywhere that the beam would be transmitted from. I wonder would there be some other method for remote CL to work or will it definitely have an IR beam from the key somewhere? I would attach a picture but I dont know how to attach it.

ML keys can be programmed by a Star but is has to be the key for the car not another key from another car if you see what I mean.

The key is probably faulty. Take it apart and have a look.

Remote keys provided with the W168 A class can be reprogrammed to your immobiliser the procedure is in your manual, However keys sold with other cars and/or sold on e-bay cannot be reprogrammed to your car. more info on my site including photo's of the open key. New key blades can however be cut & fitted to existing key fobs

I tried to take my spare key to bits last night but to no avail. I managed to get the battery cover off but the rest of the key looked like a completely sealed peice of plastic and I could not prize it apart. I guess it must come apart as it had a circuit board inside it. I have attached a picture of the type of key - any ideas how they come apart??

I had a look at Anywebs post in the DIY section which was excellent.

I have tried again but I just cant prise my key apart without completely breaking it (I think it must be glued or something). I also tried to do the synchronisation as per the manual but it didnt want to work.

Im going to admit defeat - I can use the key to unlock the car manually (although the alarm goes off until the key is put in the ignition) and it will start the car, so I guess its okay as a spare.

Thanks for your help anyway guys.

it may be glued together by the previous owner (assuming there was one) so use a sharp flat blade knife to prize it apart,

it's worthwhile doing and checking

let us know if you suceed

cheers

I think I may have completely broken my spare key now.

In my wisdom I thought i'd take the battery out and do a continuity test to see if the buttons made a circuit. I removed the key batteries and placed my multimeter on the two battery terminals and set it to continuity testing. When I pressed the key button it showed a complete circuit for a second then it went dead.

I then realised that I probably fried the key circuitry with my multi meter - I think the key works from 6 volts and the multi meter has a 9 volt battery. Damn......

Luckily the key does still start the engine.
