it would be news to me if it worked on a ford too! i worked at a ford dealership from 1992-2001 and any we had needed to go on FDS2000 tobe coded!

the thing is, given how little is actually inside them, they must cost pennies to make, so why do new merc keys have to be so expensive?

Therein lies an interesting question - as you say, the keys won't cost that much to produce and the unique coding is probably injected after manufacture so there's a healthy profit in there somewhere with a junior tech guy happily coding keys all day.

It is the handling, programming, and dispatch, and the dealer.

The chain that it goes through does cost money

In Owners manual

No need to sell keys, just sell the information!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MERCEDES-KEY-...s_SM?hash=item1e57b392b0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

As we all know it cannot be done, you've got to admire the disclaimer at the bottom of the page!

Please be advised that these instructions have NOT been tested so I cannot accept any responsibility if they fail. Bought at own risk and as seen.

BUY YOUR INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE ONE YOU CAN TRUST

This Info is actaully in the on line version of the owners manual. (USA I think) P.225 But I have not tried it. I think that that is only for a key already programmed to your car
