Hello,

My central locking button works in the car but keyfob wont, I've changed batteries ... I took drivers door panel off and played about with some wires and the windows started working and the keyfob worked, only to come back next day and all was off again..? the cars been stood a while, the rear window that did work went off and the front windows worked for a day then gone off again, what wires should I be checking for both keyfob sensor and windows please?

Trying to find the wiring to chek, my wipers and indicators went off also, I push the intruments clocks/speedo unit and they come on? could it be that for the windows and remote? where is the sensor for the remote, the heater also would'nt work so I dismantled the wiring to that and plugged conectors and and out and forced 12v to motor which worked, I put it all aback together and it works, see what I'm up against ... ps: the wipres and indicators work now by pushing the clocks about on the dash .. the speedometer I mean

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
Just to clarify on 1998 model C Class it will be W202, your ignition key is it a single button fob with a flick out key blade or is it a 3 button electronic key with a metel blade slid in the side?
Have you tried the spare key?

Its the 3 button one with boot release on ... any idea where the sensor is, I know this is just sticky wires or cables becuase both remote and windows have been working, could it be same place as wipres indicator behind instrument clusters? they came on when I played about moving the cluster... ps: how does cluster come out?

be careful removing the instrument panel (cluster) you'll need either some strong coat hanger wire (hooked 1cm at the end) on either side at 10pm and 2pm, insert and pull and the whole panel should start to slide out, you can slide it out the whole way by wiggling it and the steering wheel BUT make SURE to have the key in the OFF position (ie: no power to car) when you remove the panel as there are two cables that plug into the back of it and if you disconnect them and then power on, then it's a trip to Mercedes to get your SRS airbag warning reset.

MB have tools to remove the panel, the part number is W 140 589 02 3300

i know becuase i'm looking at them and i bought them for approx 20 quid from the mb dealer. I did try the coat hanger method first but couldnt get the wire to have sfficient force to pull my cluster out, hence the real tools from MB.

i'll be removing mine again soon to replace some bulbs, and i'll document the procedure here

cheers

So if I'm taking it off, is that where the problem lies?

i honestly don't know, it could be a mixture of problems, the first thing i'd check is your fuses, then your relays and finally resync the key to the car

instructions for that are press the open button on the key, so that the red/green lights flash, insert key to number II position in the ignition, hold it for 10 seconds, remove key press button again,

repeat a few times until the leds flash only red (when locking car) or green (when opening),

have you tried that ?

Have you checked the Car Battery voltage?

Whenever you have more than one fault it is worth a check.

Your car may start fine but the battery voltage can still be incorrect such that some of the electrics get all mixed up. All to do with the computers etc on these modern cars.
