Hi everyone
can anyone help, i am currently doing some diy work, (see thread oil in breather system), we have now found a leak on one of the seals on the rocker cover that seals around the spark plugs. I have purchased 4 new ones from mercedes but have no idea how to get the old ones out or the new ones in? Do we need a special tool? My car is a 2001 clk 230 kompressor cabriolet.

Many thanks if you can help.

Nothing special here, just take out all of the bolts (6 of I think 38 in the link) and lift it off, clean the two mating surfaces and replace the gasket

Hi Malcolm
No its not the rocker cover its inside, its the 4 rubber seals that seal around the spark plug:D Dad has managed to get 2 out now, I have no idea how he has done it because i am not with him today, but hopefully the other 2 be out soon and he thinks they will be easier to get the new ones in( fingers crossed)

Thanks Julie

Turn the rocker cover upside down on a wooden bench. Take a hammer and a centre punch to the metal around the seal and tap away. It will start to turn, once it starts to turn it should just fall out.

I use a piece of brass tube and a wooden mallet. Place on wooden bench. Sit seal in orifice, place tube over seal, tap tube with mallet, wait till sound changes (seriously, that's why I use a wooden bench) Examine the seal in the aperture and if its proud on any side adjust with tube and mallet. Takes about 5 mins per seal.

This is a another job I did when had the rocker cover re-powder coated. Starting the old seals to move out is the hardest part but, as long as the rocker cover is well supported, there is no worry about damaging the old seals in the process (as long as you have a full replacement set of the correct new seals).

Before you start the job
Examine the old seals (already in place) and note that there is no gap where the base of the seal body meets the rocker cover. When the new seals are in and (as Ian suggests) the sound has changed when you tap it, check the gaps visually so that you can confirm the seals also appear fully seated on the under side.

I added a little (very fine film) silicone lubricant to the new seals when installing them. The new seals went in far easier than the old seals coming out.
