Hi:

I have been trying to remove the starter motor from my 1982 230E but cannot get enough clearance as the manifold bracket is in the way. I have the entire starter motor free from the car (all the bolts out and electrics off), I just can't get the starter motor to move forward enough to allow me to take it away to work on it.

The manifold bracket has a main section that is attached to the engine block and a second 'V' shaped one that appears to be getting in the way.

Does anyone know if I remove that 'V' bracket, will I be able to remove the starter motor? If not is there any other way apart from removing completely the manifold bracket?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Kind Regards,

Sherry

Starter Motor Is Out!!!

For anyone with this problem, you need to remove the air cleaner and the battery. The right side of the car (opposite to the starter motor) has to be jacked up to allow sufficient clearance for the starter motor to be released from the bell housing.

Then remove the four transmission line bolts, two on either side of the bell housing and pull the two transmission lines out of the way.

Then you need to remove the left front shock absorber. After you remove any brackets that may be attached to the flat side of the starter motor, you will be able to slide the starter motor down and forward until you can swing it 180 degrees and pull it, flat side first out from the top, near the battery holder. To install just do the reverse.

For the record, the only info prior to this said the manifold and brackets had to be removed, however, I did not need to remove them to get the starter motor out.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Hello Sherry you did not get a very good welcome onto the forum, I looked at your thread but had nothing to offer and felt sure that some one would step in.

It was very kind of you to offer this information to us and it will be of use for the next one.

Maybe we can be of use the next time, other than that enjoy the rest of the forum with your comments. the site below has a lot of info on your car.

Thank You Malcolm...

G'Day Malcolm;

Thanks for your post, I will certainly be able to make use of this site for both my 230E and 260E MB's. I do all my own work on my cars... I must say in over 20 years of working on cars, I have never had this much trouble just to remove a starter motor!! But like anything, now that I know how it is a very simple matter.

I was getting a bit desperate as the alternator has gone on the 260E and until I could get the 230E on the road, I've had to charge my battery every night for the last two weeks. :-(

Now, I'm off to change the regulator on the 260E and I will have two cars back on the road again for under $60AUD. It definately pays to do your own work as long as you have lots of hair to pull out! :)

I look forward to a very enjoyable experience with this forum!

Have a great day!

Kind Regards,

Sherry
