As per title... I want to get rid of the dealer sticker in my rear window, but having had a go at the corner of it I'm now thinking that only a medium-sized nuclear weapon is going to get that glue off.

I'm assuming it has been baking on there for the 3.5 years since the car was first registered and it looks like the 'sticker' itself is going to be fairly brittle.

At my disposal I have razor blades, a large amount of trichloroethane, some pure alcohol, many cleaning cloths and a VERY bad temper.

Is there anything else I will need? Any suggestions how to do this with minimal swearing?

Good old WD40 is good for getting sticker glue off, or failing that Acetone should do the trick small 50ml bottle about £2.25 from chemist.

Hot air is also good, managements hairdryer (don’t leave it in one place until the thermal cutout kicks in) and you might find the glue more compliant

Smart + others :)
Put the heated rear window on a few times or leave it in the sun, now it’s out.

As said soften the glue with heat, I often use a hot air blower with caution as it could warp plastic o even crack a screen.

After the sticker is peeled and the remaining glue kept pliant I would use a good tape, Gorilla perhaps, using the sticky side repeatedly applied to the glue to pull it off.

Cheers for the advice. Sounds like a bit of heat is preferred: The car is currently sweating in the sun on the drive while I sort out a minor electrical issue in the house (drilled through the ring main inside the lounge wall. Plank.) but I'll have another go at the sticker while the sun is still on it later.

I'll let you know.:)

In the short term you could disconnect both ends of the damaged length.
Assuming the 'ring' is on a 30 / 32 amp breaker you would need to drop that down to (ideally) 15 / 16 amp.
The reamining cct would then be a radial so not rated to 30 amp+.

If the cct becomes over loaded it trips the breaker as designed, a 30 amp would be too high for the 2.5mm cable then being fed.
But 15 amp is still over 3.5Kw.

I cut into the wall to expose enough cable to clean it up then rejoin the ring using 30A choccy block.

I have a crimping kit but couldn't convince myself that it was suitable for gripping solid core wires so I got a local sparky out who crimped two decent tails onto the wires for £30.

I've wired up the extra sockets, bridged together to keep the ring intact, and tested it all out. All good so the hole in the wall is filled and we're good to smooth fill, sand and paint tomorrow. You'd never even know I was an idiot...

Cheers for the advice though, M80. All good to bear in mind for next time I **** up.

Re window sticker. Heat was the trick. The car got up to about a million degrees on the driveway today and sticker peeled straight off, leaving only a rectangle mark where glue had seeped out and a dodgy mess where I'd tried to peel the corner off when it was cold.

I used some Autoglym glass cleaner to dissolve the crappy corner glue, then Autoglym glass polish to clear up the faint glue lines and give the rear window a spruce up while I was sweating and contorted in the back seat.

Job done. Thanks for the advice, all. Heat beats glue every time.

Well done on completing the job, Bopo... I guess every part of it was just another of those little two minute jobs that go on and on and on... So I'm glad you didn't come to a sticky end heh heh !

I have a dealer sticker on rear of my tailgate which I was interested in removing but was put off by the possibility of damage to the window demister elements.

Maybe I should have asked the dealership to remove but car is now 3 years old so I have got used to ignoring it.

Most craft shops sell aerosol cans of 'sticky label remover' which do exactly as it says on the cans. Used these for years & nothing else needed.
Works for exterior badges as well.

The stock reply from our service department (as agreed with the Sales Manager!) to any customer requesting removal of our-name advertising stickers was "Are you sure, Sir? That's worth £100 on your part-exchange value when you talk about trading it in for a new car..." Believe it or not, most were satisfied with that and during the year the odd one or maybe two claimed their "extra £100" which of course was more than covered in their current offer!

Sorry but that sounds like total sales bullshit. Of course the dealer wants the stickers & logo number plates left on as they are a permanent 24/7/365 free advertisement. Come re-sale time there will be records as from whom the car was purchased so the argument is pathetic & I feel sorry for sales staff having to be insulted by being asked to trot out such tosh.
Over a period of 40+ years of car ownership the first job has always been to remove EVERY sticker & replace the dealer logo number plates - this has even applied to company cars issued or chosen & of course such action at my expense. This even applied to logo tax discs & their holders.
Interesting that when buying a new AMG my request for a free black logo AMG anorak jacket thing as sashayed around the dealership by the staff was turned down - even when I said I was prepared to wear it at car shows. That would have meant an on-cost for the dealership poor things.

I can be a grumpy old sod, I always ask the surprised Dealer to remove the sticker. It's always nice to part on a happy note :D

I got a 'free' Mercedes brolly when I bought my (used) ML :):)

I don't like stickers in windows either & any stuck in are soon removed.

I don't understand why people buying a new (or even used) car don't specify "no advertising stickers". If they write it on the purchase order and the dealer disobeys that instruction they are in breach of contract.

It used to happen frequently and my company's sales department hated it and used to offer the customer £100 rebate off their service charges (which happily we were authorised to bill to them internally).

A sticker is the last thing on 99.9999% of most buyers minds, they are looking forward to buying the car.

Now I bought many years ago with a non advertising sticker, but with a fat willys surf shack sticker on. I liked that and kept that a few months
