I'm in the process of taking the head off my 1989 230TE (done 200,000 miles) and want to know if there's a quick way of removing the upper timing chain rail pin.  The manual says use a puller, which I dont have.  Also, should I replace the timing chain as well.  Any help would be greatfully received.

Removing the head

Hi Stephen

What you can try. If you have a long bolt which will screw into the pin hole. 4mm I think. Don't hold me to that. Screw an nut all the way up the thread. Bolt needs to be at least 3inches long. Put a washer on it. Use a 3\8 drive 13mm socket this will go over the pin. Put the bolt through the socket. Wind the bolt into the pin. Wind the nut down onto the washer onto the socket, till it goes tight. Make sure there is enough space for the pin to move into the socket. Keep winding the nut & it should with a bit of effort come out. Top one is usuallly easy the lower a bit more difficult due to the casting. MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN OUT THE THREADS IN THE PINS BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT THIS. Ignore at your peril.

PS. As I have said on many occasions. If you are not very good with the ole diy. Then get a proffesional to do it. Just cause its done some miles. Dosn't mean the job  gets easier or dosn't need profesional to do it.

Good luck!!!!!!!!

Removing the head

Many thanks Andy, I'll give it a try.  Doing the jo myself -partly to save money, but also because I don't trust anyone to do it as well.

Do I need to remove the bottom one to get the head off?.

Removing the head

Thanks, it all worked and the head is off and the head gasket has obviously gone on cylinder 4.

One final thing, what are the chances of the timing chain slipping a notch or two on the lower cogs.  I really dont want to remove the timing cover, but will if you think I should check it.

Thanks again

Stephen
