I have a 190E 1997cc and the noise from the valve lifters is becomming excessive, as is the oil consumption. My mechanic has suggested a cylinder head rebuild although I an unsure if it would be better to consider a remanufactured engine. (The engine is performing well apart from the above faults) There are 150,000 miles on the clock (possibly plus a few more!)

Does anyone have any info on this?

My 190E engine is on 191k and still doing OK, but
getting noisy and burning oil like yours.

What oil do you use? The bect in my experience is semi synthetic (which is also what MB recommended). This keeps the noise down, but the consumption is higher than mineral oil.

The decision to overhaul the head or the whole engine depends on a number of things. This engine is known for the valve stem oil seals to go and if this is the case oil will get into the combustion chambers here. In this case a head overhaul will fix both the noise and the oil consumption.

If the wear is in the bores of the cylinders, overhauling the head will not fix this, obviously. You can get the engine pressure tested and this should identify the source of the wear.

For me, I accept that the noise goes away once the engine is warm. The cost of the extra oil is a lot less that the cost of the repair, so I can live with that too.

during a head overhaul the hydraulic elements can be replaced, this helps to reduce the tappet noise you are experiencing. If the noise is not completely stopped then there are shims on top of the valves that are sized, an experinced mechanic will be able to determine what oversize you need.
If the oil gives visible smoke only when cold then its usually the piston rings or cylinders that are worn, if when warm, you get smoke when accelerating then its the valve stem seals

Thanks for that.

There's no oil visible and no evidence of a leak. Appears to be a bit of smoke when you accelerate hard and maybe a burnt oil smell when you park and get out, but by no means clouds of smoke.

One weird thing that I didn't mention is that although the tappets are noisy when cold, they are also *really* noisy if you fill the sump after an oil change. This noise persists constantly until the oil level drops. Keeping it just above minimum seems to keep the noise away. I can't figure this one out at all.

I'm going to get a compression test done anyhow, in the hope that a head rebuild could solve the problem.

Thanks again

Replace/Repair 190 Engine

Hiya All,

I see the ole oil consumption & tappet problem rears it ugly head once again.

Before you carry out repairs Mark. Please read  pg 4 of this forum marked " 190 tappets need replacing" and also pg 3 300TE 24 fuel consumption. The info I have written there may be of help in deciding what to do. What Neil say's is correct. Except you need a cylinder leakage test. NOT A COMPRESSION TEST!

The problem with the oil consumption is more that likely with the cylinder head. Even at this millage. But take one step at a time. And stat with the cylinder leakage test.

Regards

Yes, Andy. I know you need a leakage test, which is what I called a pressure test. You term is the correct one, but that is what I meant. Thanks for putting me right!
