Replacement speakers

Hi all, I was tootling along on my way home from work tonight listening to my stereo and I decided, as though I haven't spent enough recently, that I might change the speakers in my C200 W202. My question is this, after having work done on cars in the past by car audio places, invariably there is always the odd rattle once the work has been done to annoy me. While in other cars I could put up with it but I would hate it in my new car as I am really getting used to wafting along in near silence, the build quality means there isnt a single squeak or rattle and i am in heaven.

Now, whilst I would love to improve the sound quality of my audio system (although I am no loud music junkie lol) I wouldn't like to run the risk of someone who doesn't know their way around Mercedes messing up all my interior so my question is this....who do you normally trust to do this kind of work? Ideally I would like to replace the speakers with very good quality kit to link to the Panasonic head unit that the previous owner installed.

your thoughts would be appreciated, even if its just to say get a grip and just use your local Halfords!!

The experts always say 10% equipment and 90% installation. On that basis you can improve the existing setup - and any future upgrades - by soundproofing the doors, sealing holes in the door skin behind the door card, making sure the speaker is airtight to the door skin and mass-loading the area around the speaker mount.

It's tempting to think you can improve things just by swopping kit. You may be able to, but simple things like speaker mounting make a huge difference. Some people fit steel rings to the door to bolt the speaker to. It makes lots of sense - basic speaker theory!

Use full tip by bolide,, as the loudspeaker cone moves , it tend to push the speaker frame /chassis if the chassis moves it is sound lost,, the larger the baffle the better the sound

Hi,
I have done speaker upgrades to both my 202's, and the limitations and the position of the speakers on the 202 are not great, the cheapest way of getting a reasonable sound improvement from them would be to use a decent set of combination 6.5" speakers mounted in the front doors (adapter rings have to be used but are made by Autoleads and are quite cheap £15ish). Don,t rely on the existing speaker wiring, and wire the speakers direct to head unit. The original tweeters (fitted in the dash top each side), these are not that well sited, and difficult to mount anything other than standard units in the position. Far better position for the new Tweeters would be immediatly behind the door mirror, and fitting the crossovers inside the door panel, if your 202 has rear shelf speakers, you can also mount 6.5" speakers with adapter rings in there place too.
I would buy a decent set of speakers such as Alpine, Kicker or Focal.
You could also attempt to use some dynamat to help deaden the door panel from drumming/vibrating.
On my 43 202 i actually fitted custom door builds, to try to eliminte all aspects of what is inheritedly wrong with a standard 202 speaker position.
