Hi All,

I'm new to the world of Mercedes Benz Owners Forum and a first time owner. Can anyone please advise on the following questions ?

I'm due to replace my tyres at some point soon and noticed the tyres fitted are Continental Sport contact SSR run flats. The front tyres are 225/40/19 Y XL & the rears are 255/35/19 Y.

I bought the car with less than 3,000 mls, so they are the original fitted set. Please see attached photos.

Question 1 - Why are they different sizes and is there an obvious benefit ?

Question 2 - They are also marked with MOE, which I understand is the specification fitted on their production line. Do I need to replace the set with the same MOE symbol ?

Question 3 - Do I have to fit run flats and would fitting another manufacturers tyre with the exact same sizes invalidate any insurance claim should I be involved in an accident ?

I would welcome anyone help or advice.

Best regards

Hello and welcome

Different sizes as the wheels are different widths to give a staggered “fashionable” look. The overall diameter will be the same which is why the wider rears have a smaller sidewall aspect ratio. (The 35)

You don’t need to have MO spec, as long as you meet the speed and load requirements for the car

Runnflats are awful spine jarring tyres, you don’t need to have them, just make sure you have the correct load and speed ratings on the replacement tyres.

Tyre choice is a very emotive subject. I like Conti's & my rear ones have done over 30K miles & are still legal.
I also like Uniroyal Rainsports a bit cheaper than the Conti's, they are on the front of the E class & on my wife's SLC.

Q1 - it looks much cooler

Q2 - MO means "Mercedes Original", you do not have to stick to that

Q3 - No and No, you can put any brand tyre on the car so long as they are the same size and load ratings

Run Flats are terrible things and destroy the ride quality

Front

Rear

Put a can of goop in the boot just in case and enjoy the much better ride quality

I have an e400, which is the same model as yours except higher spec engine, you can run 20" wheels on that no problem (I do), they look great

here are the part numbers of the 20" amg wheels and ET size if you are interested, you can easily find replacements on ebay

W213/C238 compatible

front wheel
245/35R20
mb pn A2134012200
8JX20 H2
ET 43

back wheel
275/30R20
mb pn A2134012300
9JX20 H2
ET 49

you can use the following 20" tires

front

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 245/35R20 95Y NA0 FP

rear

Nokian Hakka Black 2 275/30R20 97Y XL

Hankook Ventus S1 evo 2 K117 275/30R20 97Y Sound Absorber, Reinforced

also I should point out, don't try and put your front wheels on the rear of the car or vice versa, they will damage your calipers on the front of the car...and the inside of the wheel

in other words, the obviously thicker rear wheels are designed only to be on the rear of the car, the thinner wheels on the front, it'll be very obvious when all 4 wheels are off which 2 are the thick ones...

Looks amazing ....great specification too, I've not seen a E400 coupe before... my neighbour has just bought a new E200. I've attached a photo of mine, wasn't sure of the colour, however it's grown on me and the price was right :)

yeah as Blobcat says, your car is a C300, not an E300, your thread title though was for an E300, which confused me,

you can discard my wheel advice as i'm fairly sure the C class has different wheels size dimensions (ET) than you get on the E class, but I could be wrong, do you know the current ET of the wheels on your car, they will be different front/back, you can read the ET numbers (and part numbers) on the inside of each wheel

your Coupe looks nice, certainly a different style of colour to what I'm used to, but it's still very nice

The Goodyear Asymmetric 3 is a great tyre and you can find some MO approved Non run-flats through Kwikfit for the same price. I think if they’re MOE tyre, that normally means they are run flat but not sure.

I had Michelin Pilot sport 4 all around which aren’t MO on my E220 and I do think there is a difference to MO tyres. The ride dynamic didn’t feel as good as the Asym 3 MO tyre set. The PS4 is a great tyre but didn’t last as long as I thought, nor does it protect the rim as well.

That tyre has been replaced by the Assymetric 5 now

True but I don’t think they’re MO yet. Assy 3 is still a great tyre

Yes depending on the size. I am looking at GY F1 Assy 3 for my W251. They appear the best for rain and noise (70db) in that size. I am only changing since the current (contis contact sp 2) are starting to have micro cracks in the sidewalls and the fronts are 2014 stamped...
They all have at least 4mil tread.
