as you see i have a ancient 1979 307d / 4 speed camper
the engine is absolutely gutless.
has anybody done a replacement with a more powerful
engine - 308d/309d?
or an engine from a different manufacturer?
is it possible?
what is involved?
can the 307d gearbox be used?
etc etc
i would be very grateful for any advice
many thanks

Good afternoon and welcome.
This has been done before 6 d diesels on you tube has done this to a T1 207d with a om601.
Best to contact him as he will know all the pitfalls.
Hope this is of help.

Daresay you are already aware of this hence just the engine change query, but just in case tempted;
I've known of a few 207d owners resorting to a bolt on turbo, albeit a low pressure version. I'm unaware of the long term outcome (possibly only short term!) was for these 'conversions', maybe they went on for donkeys. However I do know that the factory turbo versions of many, if not all Merc. engines weren't just confined to simply bolting on a unit, but often involved lowering compression, oil cooling of cyl. walls, adding an intercooler, fuel pump change & timing adjustments, etc. And we all know Mercedes don't waste money unnecessarily o_O

thanks Rockon, i dont think just sticking on a turbo is a long term proposition. as you so correctly pointed out not all engines are suited for this and as you stated lots of things to change. i dont need a 130bhp engine (i am not sure the old girl would be able to cope with that), but a genuine 80-90 would be very nice. thanks again for your feedback
