Replacing a Xenon Bulb

Just got a malfunction message come up telling me that the 'Front L Low Beam Bulb' needs checking. I've checked the bulb and sure enough it's not working. The model is a 2001 S Class (W220) with Xenon headlights.
Easy job I thought, buy a bulb and replace it. However upon reading the handbook it says due to the high voltage this should only be done by the dealer.
My question: Should I do as the book says and pay dealer prices or can I do it myself? A website says the fitting is a 'D2R' and I've found this UK site selling them for £69 inc. vat and postage.

Has anyone here actually changed one? Also I assume the dealer will have to reset the malfunction message or will it just go when the bulb is replaced ?

All advice gratefully received. Many thanks.

Sorry for delay in answering, This is the first request of this type that I have seen. On reading the MB guide to this, the same rules apply as working on ignition circuits, that is that no one with a pacemaker should go near these devices. The high voltage on these units can be lethal.
Be very sure that the lights are turned off. When you replace the lamp, all protective covers must be fitted before you turn the lights on. As with halagon lamps no surface should be touched by fingers.
The site below gives pictures of the lights dismantled, find your car, then go to electrics, center row, then lights.

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for the information. I'll give the dealer a call and get a price but will probably go for the £69 bulb from the above website.
Got in the car tonight and the message screen said 'No Malfunction'. Soon as I tried the lights the message re-appeared. I'm hoping therefore that the message will not need a reset by the dealer once I've replaced the bulb.
Thanks again.
Doug.

There are no codes to clear, it just a matter of plugging in the new one taking care at the same time, the lamps are auto leveling, and nothing to adjust.

Changing Xenon Bulb

HI

I have a similar problem on my CLS AMG 55 - the passenger main beam headlamp bulb has gone. MB have checked and it is the bulb not the control unit but they are quoting £239 to change the bulb inc £86 for the bulb. How do you change it? and is there any way of removing the shock threat? - Maybe remove a fuse or disconnect the battery? If this is a DIY job how do you get to the bulb?
Many thanks
