hi peeps,

just joined the club, so hello to all.

I have my 03 311 cdi and has done 115k miles. Think the alternator has about had its day (or so I've been told by garage) All belts are tight and normal deflection in them.
I hope I can replace this myself but can anybody help me from accessing the alternator to removing and replacing. Whilst it is off is there anything I should check for replacing if need be.
I have been given various prices for replacement alternator from £160 (trade) to nearly £300 and they are not merc geuine parts:confused:

Thanks Jamie

The noise is like a deep 'whirring' sound and straight away garage looked at the miles it has done and said....alternator. He said it would last a good few miles before it goes completely. I thought I would do it and get it over with...presuming it is the alternator.
