I,ve just aquired a 1997 C 220 estate with the self leveling rear suspension...it failed it,s mot with leaking rear shocks...there are no replacements available from Merc. but Monroe have a SALOON version available from the NON leveling version...can these be substituted in place of the hydraulic set-up if I strip out all pipework.

Try Aerosus for the shocks.
I put some on my S500 earlier this year and they have been fine so far.

My suspension is Hydraulic...not air...it uses the power steering pump & accumulators to regulate the height.

Yes it can, but you will need to fit non SLS rear springs to get the ride height correct on the rear.

Non SLS rear springs will be stiffer, so removal of the SLS struts will cause the rear to be too low.

So I use the shocks & springs from the saloon...is this what you are suggesting.

Essentially yes.

but there are 3 or 4 springs specs for the saloon, depending on the total number of points, so you may need to expriment with spring pads for correct ride height
