Will be replacing my water pump on the C240 ( W203 with M112 engine )
Car is only at 33K miles but the current water pump is clunking a bit and has some play in it.
Merc wanted £400 for the part so I went aftermarket and got an INA ( German part, designed specifically for Mercedes ) one, instead.

My car has an oil cooler so the pump itself has 3 connectors on it.

I will make a stencil around the gasket on some cardboard and then place the bolts into it as I go, so I know where they go when re-installing.
I understand a couple of the holes in the new part will not have threads and therefore will have to put the " self tapping " bolts which are on the car in them to create threads. Is this correct ?

Any advice at all please ? I know it is a fairly big job but should manage it.

OK. Old water pump is off.

What is the best way to clean the area, before fitting the gasket and new pump.?

Also. My C240 W203 does not have the rubber O-Ring, just the metal gasket.
No need for any gasket sealant right ?

Thanks

Best way is a Stanley knife blade or good old fashioned safety razor blades. Gently use to lift all the old gasket off the metal taking care not to dig into the gasket surface.

Thanks :)
I bought a German part ( INA ) and it came with the thin gasket.
Is it a better idea to buy the OEM Genuine gasket straight from Mercedes and fit that instead ?

Not knowing what either gasket looks like I can't say.

This is what the brand new aftermarket gasket looks like, and is identical to the MB OEM one. I read somewhere that someone recommended not using aftermarket gaskets.
The aftermarket one has some minor scratches on the outer edges which is bugging me a bit.

The only gasket face you need to worry about is the engine side, it needs to be clean and free of any lumps of hardened old gasket.
The gasket is there to seal any manufacturing machining irregularities on the mating faces.

Spent the majority of yesterday removing the waterpump from my 2002 Merc.

Today I attempted to fit the new one, however long story short I ended up bending the gasket when I was checking to see if it would all fit.
One bolt would not go in, and I figured the gasket was blocking the hole - which was the case.
New gasket on the way.

Is there any way I can I use some adhesive to keep the gasket stuck to the back of the pump, even if just a tiny bit. It would make the job much easier.
I know that some adhesives are bad to get into the coolant system hence the question.

Is anything like this any use ?

If in doubt use Hylomar blue.
It's not cheap but it's excellent.

I'm not a fan of silicone as it can form small beads where it squished out and these can break off after a while and block cores.
