if you trawl through all the danger of death risks and all the other usual wis-net blurb the actual process is very simple. spinning n/s wheels and connecting star afterwards is not necessary. like i said it`s just lock/unlock blah blah. never put the key in while disabled though, obviously.

I can't believe Mercedes has made replacing brake pads and rotors so difficult. Is this SBC system really worth all this extra effort?

Oh yes,, the joy of paying out for a £1k pump makes it all worthwhile

Hi Alexander,

I don't have the Keyless Go in the detailed instructions that you provided. Is there another set of instructions for the regular key that you insert? Can you tell me where you went to find this and perhaps I can do the search myself? Thanks

ok, it is actually far simpler than it seems. to de-activate the sbc system...

all keys removed from vehicle, all doors closed.
lock for minimum 30 secs
unlock for minimum 15 secs
lock
wait minimum 15 seconds.

you can now perform all brake fluid changes, brake pad/caliper/hose changes safely. BUT REMEMBER NOT TO UNLOCK THE VEHICLE OR TRY TO OPEN ANY DOORS (eg reach in through open window to open door).

to reactivate you are supposed to...

unlock
turn ignition key to position 2
turn key back to position 1, for between 1 to 5 seconds (no more than 5, no less than 1!!)
turn key back to position 2
rotate n/s/r wheel 1 to 2 revolutions per second for at least 3 seconds
rotate n/s/f wheel within 60 seconds
indicators flash 3x times
brake pads are 'applied' (pushed up to disks)
turn key back to position 0
start car
depress brake pedal
ensure no warning lights are illuminated.

now, the first part is VERY simple, and absolutely necessary. the second part used to re-activate the system is complex and not vital in practice, in fact this is usually ignored - the guys just start up the engine and press the pedal once, sbc does the rest. but in the interests of safety always make sure you have the correct pedal travel and power assistance BEFORE driving!!

After its gone to sleep (vehicle stationary, key out, remote locked and then left >20 seconds), SBC will wake up (and therefore MAY decide to do the pre-drive selfcheck including the potentially disasterous high-pressure squeeze..) if you do any of :

Open a door (or the boot/hatch!)
Operate central locking
Press the brake pedal
Operate the handbrake (oh yes!)
Turn the key to position1

Otherwise it won't.....

Best not to leave the new pads in the boot while you remove the old ones!!

Also best to have the bonnet down because its linked to the alarm.

I have used this process 10s of times now (plus the position 2/1/2 shuffle to reactivate) with no problems at all.

Occasionally there is a brief red cluster during the first couple of seconds if the new pads are a long way from the pistons and therefore need a long squeeze before pressure builds up.

What's the latest re any process for non-Star bleeding of this system? The official route takes over an hour and 1.5L of fluid. (I haven't attempted to do it without).

the sbc system can be reliably bled for a fluid change by disabling the sbc as my earlier post and using a pressure bleeder. we usually bleed through about 1L of fluid, and charge 1/2 hr. dead easy and trusted to the grease monkeys. we do always check for leaks at the nipples after, just in case.

enclosed is part of the wis document, if you open in a new tab and view at about 300% it should be legible. this is the best i can do as the pdf is too large to attatch to a post here. i would be happy to provide the full pdf if the admins could make that possible somehow?

I still think that it is safer by disconnecting the battery,,I would never trust that method

this method is used and certified by MB. do not believe that they always use star to disable, this is just not the case. the jpeg i posted came straight from the wis document i quoted. we change w211 brake pads every day with no problems.

Yes I believe that is fine when you feel safe and happy with it. I did see the document year ago on a USA forum, I know that it works as you still have all of your fingers, most of us only do it say once or twice in 3 years

As long as you never use the brake pedal,,then they will see the life of the car out

If you leave the pads to wear away and ignore the warning lamp,,you will be reminded that they should be replaced, when when you brake the car sounds like a train, when the iron to iron makes contact.:D

Lynall

i am not always so nice about them.

not worth worrying too much about brakes though, they only slow you down.
