I've read in the manual that since my E500 has SBC I should have the replacement performed by the dealer. Its says the SBC must be deactivated first or the brake pistons will extend and brake fluid will leak. Is it really that difficult? I've always replaced my brakes in the past on Acuras and earlier Mercedes.

I'm guessing here but would disconnecting the battery be enough to disarm the system?

don`t bet on it, sbc has an accumulator so could still provide pressure to the pistons, although i doubt that it would.

there is a very straightforward way to disable for pad changing involving locking/waiting/unlocking/waiting/locking that most workshops use. it is DIY-able, do a web search for the specifics on disabling, or malcolm may be able to extract it from wis for you?

The SBC system MUST be de-activated before doing any work on your brakes!
Mercedes use Star to do this but you can buy/borrow a special tool if you want to do it yousrself--I would not say its a DIY job really on this model unless you really know what you are doing --take care!--you got the new pads and rotors then?

Normally I tell people to push the brake pedal a few time and the system is then fully discharged. There is no other way other than being connecting up to STAR.

Another MB engineer has said that do not leave the key in, or open a door, and you can do it without disconnecting the batteries, but I have noticed that the SBC can still charge up.

The teaching programs run by MB tell you to unplug the SBC pump, I do not like this as it is a live circuit.

By disconnecting the battery, and pressing the brake pedal the system is dead and safe, I have put this out at least 40 times now

>>By disconnecting the battery

Is the SBC pump fused?

Could it be possible to remove the fuse, thus saving any potential SAM problems upon re-connection?

Thanks for bringing it up,,this was something that I was going to check on ages ago, but forgot.

When machine number 2 is on this evening I will check on that,,the only thing is it would leave a fault code,,but that would do no harm, as we would know why it did that

as i said, merc mechanics simply disable by winding o/s window down, remove key, lock for 15+ seconds, unlock for 30+ etc etc or some such process. we do pads on one or two (or three or four!) this way each day. the other guys have the process memorised but i am far too busy with das to get involved with such humdrum stuff as changing pads :)

No, I don't have the new rotors or pads, I'm still in the research stage.

Easy peezy, SBC should be deactivated with star but I shouldnt think even Mercedes bother to do this as long as you careful and keep your fingers away from the pistons all should be good.
