Hi guys new to this forum
Just got a 1999 E200 petrol classic, put £20 in yesterday and today the fuel light has come on but this light is just below the 1/4 full line, does this mean I have reserve fuel? We haven't done many miles since yesterday

I await a response

Andy :)

once the light comes on, this is classed as the 'reserve fuel' part of the tank. there is no seperate reserve. and if we are honest £20 doesnt buy much fuel nowadays (about 3 gallons!)

Usually when the light comes on it means you have approx 8ltre of fuel remaining before empty.

I have the tank contents remaining display enabled on my cluster. It reads in gallons only - in 0.2 gal increments. I can tell you that the instant that it first dips to 2.0 gals remaining, the light comes on and stays on - even if it subsequently rises to 2.2 or whatever going up/down a long hill.

Fill it to the top now, subtract what you put in from a full tank and then you'll know for future reference what you had left in the tank ;)

All of my mercedes have had 8 to 10 litres once the lamp comes on, it can make a big difference if the car is pointing uphill or downhill

Mine is really bad.
Once the yellow light comes on, just under 1/4 line it seems by the distance I have Im down to a tea cup full.

Reserve light on the CLS means between 12 and 45 miles ;)

I drove half way up through mid Wales with the light on, I did 130 miles in total, it became something of a challenge after awhile as I knew the Shell station I wanted to get to, just not if I'd get there. I put in just over 80Ltrs (in an 80 Ltr tank) so I knew I was just about on the limit when I got there...;-)

I think that we all play that game at one time or another.
I once managed to get my old E430 down to the point where I put 78.6 litres into its 80 litre tank. I think that was as close as I wanted to get!

Back to the OP. I'm afraid that the E200 will be as uneconomical as one of the larger engine 6 cylinders, just because of the size of the car.

I want to know why the light comes on, just as you join a motorway.

Or 2 mins after passing a little beat up garage with sky high prices, as you head down a maze of country lanes.

Or what seems the day after you filled up, but on your way to an important meeting.

I run the estate e200 and find it economical, especially in town, compared with a six cylinder model.

Perhaps a service is due?

It's for the same reason as why the radio traffic announcements only ever tell you about a problem you're already stuck in or at least it's too late to change your route. :)
