Hi there, I have a nice 1971 280SL I bought way back in the mid 1980's, which was originally dark green. I had her resprayed a light silver colour. Thing is, they didn't do the engine bay, and now I'd like to make her "correct".

So my options are:

1. Respray the car back to the original dark green to match the engine bay.

2. Respray just the engine bay silver to match the rest.

But I have no idea of the costs here. Spraying the engine bay means taking the engine out etc, which would have to be done by MB I'd say.

Does anyone have any idea of costs here, or other advice?

Thanks !

What a question :D:D any firm could lift the engine out, should be cheaper than a complete re spray again, you could end up with too much paint

That is my thoughts and welcome to the forum :D:D

Why would mb have to do it? In England we have specialist companies who restore sl's, do you not have similar companies in Belgium?

Aha - I thought it was that specialised MB would have to do it - good news !

So I'll scout around for a Belgian company - maybe I should ask the MB club over here, in my best franglais.

Thanks !

Just one thing, can anyone give me a rough idea how much I could expect to pay for having the engine taken out, the bay cleaned and painted, then the engine put back ?

I would be happy if I could get that done properly for less than £1000.

And an idea of the cost of a full respray?

Ring around some local bodyshops. UK prices will be of no use to you. Ask for recommendations from people who have used bodyshops in your area, quality of work varies and you get what you pay for.

As above very hard to say, its usually a "love" job ie its hard to charge what its worth.
