I have a 96 sl500 with no rear seats. i was thinking of finding a used set matching my interior and fitting them in. But i have the large Bose base speaker and amp i think it is under the left side rear storage compartment. My question is, will the seats still fit over this? I cant tell until i've bought some seats which will be too late.

Was the R129 ever homologated with rear seats?

Got them in mine too. Pretty pointless as you can't get anyone in them unless they or the person in the front seat has no legs.

Still not sure as my Bose base unit seams to have 2 large holes (to let sound out i presume) in the vertical part under the rear left seat and it looks like this is replaced by the seat, if i were to try and swap. I have 2 smallish kids, so although the rear seats are useless for adults, i can probably squeeze one or 2 kids in there.

Does it have rear seat belts?

Even kids would struggle to fit unless the front seat occupants compromise their seating position.

Those rear seats seem to be just for show and don't really have a practical purpose as far as l can see. Look nice though. At least my SLK doesn't have the space for them so that removes any temptation to have them fitted.

I wouldn't be happy squeezing my young kids in there & imagine that 'lap belts' would be pretty useless.

I have never used them as non to happy about putting my Granddaughter in just a lap belt in the back of our SL.
You can get three point harnesses for them, but still no real room in the back.
Guess they are fitted to stop passengers leaving the seat incase of a crash, bit like the airline industry; just containing the mess..

I found I can get someone in fine if the passenger rolls their seat forward a fair bit, but she is still ok with legroom and she isn't tiny, not much of a problem then, but it would not be good for a long trip for the person in the rear because the rollover bar has to be up and it is fairly low.
