Is it possible to retrofit cruise control to an A Class (current model)?
Yep, certainly is.
You must have a manual car then as the auto's come with it.
Thanks for the reply. I am thinking of buying a used manual A Class and cruise is a must for me. I have some experience of VWs, where you can buy a replacement indicator stalk and enable cruise via the VW diagnostic software called VAG-COM. There a few specialists who will do this for you. Is the process of adapting a Merc similar? Of course the easy way would be to buy a car with cruise already fitted! Your comment about the auto's having it as standard is interesting and may sway my decision.
I have a stalk that you can have very cheaply. You will also need a new plastic cowling for the stering wheel which I might also have somewhere. I replaced both these on my A class when I installed linguatronic.
The job involves taking the steering wheel off, dismantling (very carefully) the switch assembly and installing the stalk/controller. Then a bit of coding with STAR.
I am sure we could come to some arrangement as I have a cruise control kit for a VW that needs fitting to my wifes EOS. I have STAR for the Mercedes and VAG Com for the VW.
To be honest though you are probably best off getting an auto with it on already. But if you want to do the job, let me know.
No different stalks.
Should be enough but hard to tell from the picture. The tricky part is dismantling the column without moving the contact spiral much.

Hi Alfie , I know this is an old thread but we have a w169 A 170 auto, reg GL05 BTZ and there is no cruise control fitted is it just a question of getting the control stalk and getting an expert like you to fit and code??I have a stalk that you can have very cheaply. Hi jules , I wish to do the same on my 2005 a170 auto.can the cowl be removed without taking the steering wheel off? and if so I am hoping a new stalk will slot into existing wiring.adapt the cowl and get the car coded is it that simple? thanksI'b attempting to fit cruise to my 2005 a170 manual.
So far I've fitted the cruise stalk Iif I got from a breakers.
Procedure:
The airbag is secured with 2 torx30 bolts,
Remove the 2 connectors from the rear of the airbag by sliding the catch and pulling the orange tabs upwards.
I braced the wheel with a piece of wood with bubble wrap aroud the end to procect the wheel. This can then be used to wedge on the floor, using another piece of wood to spread the load.
The wheel is held on with a 10mm hex bolt. I used a car jack handle to extend the hex key and get the leverage. Hold the wheel whilst turning the bolt.
Line the wheel up straight & take a picture of the wheel splines. The wheel can then come off.
The cowl is held on with a torx bolt
Remove the indicator stalk from the cowl. You can the see the connector where the cruise stalk fits to.
I didn't get a new cowl and just cut a slot for the cruise stalk. Looks good and the limit light does come on.
I took the car to a local MB independent to get the option enabled. They say they have done it on other vehicles and it's booked in next week for them to have a go.
Question is can anyone who has done this advise on where to enable this in Star and confirm if it is possible to do?
