Rev limiter?

Hi folks,

Quite new to this forum; any help would be gratefully received. Just changed my 1987 190 with 210,000 miles for a 1993 220TE with a mere 172,000.

I've managed to trace & fix a few odd faults on it, but I have a few irritating running problems. When cold she starts perfectly, but stalls when put into Drive; after about 3-5 minutes she's fine. Hot starting is fine. Could it be the cold start injector? Where might I look for the beast?

Another oddity is the way the engine performs above 4,500 rpm or so. Rev it with no load and somewhere between 4,000 and 4,500 she starts to cut out, as though a rev limiter was cutting in. When running under load this can happen at lower revs such as 3,500 and the problem stays until she drops below 2,500. I suspected fuel starvation, so I changed the fuel filter, but that had no effect. Any suggestions?

Also can anyone tell me if the 220 has one or two fuel pumps? (it was a bit dark under there!).

Counds like you've got an air leak in the fueling system.

Unless there's obvious signs of diesel spray in the engine compartment then it's most likely to be earlier in the system.

I believe that the fuel filter is a common place for leaks.

Thanks for the suggestion Chris, it could be an air leak, though I'm not sure how I'll track it down. I doubt if it's at the fuel filter since I just changed that without affecting the problem. I'd be surprised to find a diesel leak on a TE ;)

My mistake for not reading it correctly. For some reason I thought it said TD, but my mistake.

Rereading your post - when warm and under load does the car rev freely up to the point that it starts misbehving?

Could your MAF be suspect?

I think Malcolm has answered my question about the number of fuel pumps and about the behavior in neutral. It is possible that you're right about the MAF Chris.

The symptoms under load are that it behaves perfectly up to about 3,500. On a long run I noticed that above 3,000 rpm I noticed a rapid vibration, very like the effect of a rough or ridged stretch of road. I first noticed it on the motorway and assumed it was the road surface. When I accelerate beyond that point the "rev-limiter" effect becomes apparent and the engine hesitates rythymically. This behavior continues until I drop the speed to below 2500 or so, when it returns to normal. If I run for a while at this speed all is well and I can bring the speed back up for a while until the problem gradually returns.

It sounds like a form of fuel starvation, so in fairness to those who've taken the time to post, I shall crawl underneath and disconnect one of the pumps to see the effect. I'll post the result.

Thanks everyone
