Reverse gear problem (Auto) - 320CE

Hello, I have a problem with the reverse gear on my 320Coupe. The gear selects fine but when the throttle pedal is pressed the car judders violently as it reverses. On flat ground, with the car in reverse, but with no power applied it glides backwards without fuss until the throttle is pressed. Any ideas? Hoping its not a new gearbox....

Have you checked all the mountings right along the engine and power train, weak rear shocks can also cause the rear axle to judder under heavy acceleration..

Try a Stall test, see if the transmission slips in reverse, stall speeds forward and reverse should be the same if neither drive range is slipping, this eliminates external factors as have been suggested, a higher stall speed or even runaway in reverse would probably be damaged clutch plates.

Good idea, put the car in R with foot on brake and rev the engine, should not go over 2k RPM. Only do it for max 20 sec

A word of caution about stall tests on 'faulty' automatic transmissions.

I had a mechanic perform a stall test on a Subaru automatic trans that had a slipping reverse gear, he had all the pressure gauges connected and followed the factory procedure.

One very loud BANG later, it ended up costing me £3500 for a new transmission.

YMMV, but I urge caution and suggest taking it to a transmission specialist.
