It's a totally unfair system that should have been abolished years ago and duty added to fuel instead.
Those who use the roads most pay the most. With EV's, some kind of tax should be payable if they are using the roads.
It is Road Fund Licence after all.

Vehicle Excise Duty unfortunately - agree it’s outdated - it still gives the exchequer plenty of £££££££ so unlikely to change much until they start losing ££

1m BMs, 1.5m Vaux, and 1.8 Ford tractors going round the M25 all day long paying £20 to £30 each per year - and these days, another 1m electric ones all paying nothing, doesn't raise very much, then we have <15,000 old duffers being robbed £695 for a car they take out on quiet roads less than twice a week...

they would raise a lot more if ANY car pays a base £200 on their worthlessness check (every year and or 10k miles) and then we introduce an ANPR system on usage with varying rates for time and day of travel, congestion level you are contributing to, and an additional £1000 per term for any one that drops off or picks up children within a mile of a ANY school during term time

and what happens if you own more than one vehicle yet are the only user.... ? you pay thousands, yet are never on the roads as all you do is ring up insurers, buy road tax, book MOTs and cycling to the parts department (as they are so clogged you can't reach them by car !), so you can waste time servicing and putting tyres on the flipping things
