Hi all, an update on my recent purchase of my C320.
Got the car few weeks ago and wasn't happy with the idle, they have replaced all components listed on here MAF, plugs, HT leads, now runs like a swiss watch and very happy with it.
Can anyone advise on a small problem that my wife can't get to grips with - we stay on quite a steep hill, when parking and the car is in drive it tends to roll back meaning you have to quickly jump on the gas to stop this, our old C200 would remain in the same position when in drive so why the rolling back.
Would be most grateful to hear from you.
Many thanks
Gary

Your auto box should hold, however if the hill is really steep the older auto boxes don't always hold that well. I left foot brake which although takes time to learn I find it useful in these situations.
However if it is not holding at all you have a gearbox problem

thanks blobcat, gearbox seems flawless through the gears, it is quite a steep hill. about 1:6 gradient. I was planning in getting ATF fluid changed soon just because I don't know when it was last done.

1:6 is probably a little steep for the box to hold, but try the fluid change and see what happens.

It would also seem that maybe the idle speed is a little on the low side.

mine wont hold on much above a gentle incline, but the previous 5 sp auto did have a hill holder on it that held on any hill.

i emailed Mercedes and they said, its quite normal. if the hill is of such an angle, then the weight of the car can overcome the torque needed to hold the car when at idle. a slight increase in throttle and it should hold. if you are worried, however, call in to a dealer and have them check it.

I went to a dealer and everything was normal, it doesnt have any issues and it will hold if you apply a small amount of throttle.

thanks guy's for replies.television I did note that the car idles quite low but I put it down to it being a V6, 1st one I have owned. It seems to idle very happily about 700 revs.

OK 700 is perfect for that car, and that is more on the high side, so no problem there. Come to think of it, I do not think that mine will hold on my drive way, but I always have a foot on the brake, when not on the throtle.

I'd just agree with the above. My 202 does hold wheras the 210 and 211 have a tendancy to roll back. All to do with torque slip I expect. Both have done so from new so its definately not a fault.

Interesting, my SL has a rock solid idle at 500rpm and I havent found a hill yet that it wont'd hold on - have to pop down to Porlock and try it there.

Its something that I have not given much thought to, the hills around here are very steep, even my V70R rolls back down here, that is why I got rid of the 1928 RR it was bottom gear the whole time, I think it is a some do and some don't situation.
