the car is a 1991 sl class AMG i'm not too sure which AMG unless they only done one on that year. anyway. its a job i'm doing so its not my car unfortunately. but after rebuilding the car i have now come against the power hood not powering the undo part. it only locks.

how do i get the fault codes off the car and where roughly is the contol module for the roof?

any help would be greatly received,
Thanks
Dave

ps, hi btw :)

Hello and welcome to the forum.

A few things first. the roof will not move until it know where the windows and roll bar are.

So you have to memorize that by turning the key to 2 and holding up each window it turn and hold the switch in the up mode for 10 sec,,you must do the same with the roll bar.

There are loads of micro switches and sensors,, the rollbar sensors on early cars are on each end of the rear axle,, mid 92 they changed to 1 in the center of the axle,,then 95 on they moved the single one into the car under the center arm rest box.
The flashing of the roof switch is giving the fault code

You will find the layout of all of the roof parts here in the link

Hi Malcolm and thank you for the response. i will try this tomorrow. the battery has been off and has been flat a few times in its time in storage so i guess a few things need resetting.

anyway let me get this straight...
turn the key to ignition on (pos 2)
operate drivers window to top.
operate passenger window to top
while holding the roof operating switch in forward position for 10 secs on each window and rollbar?

sorry i confuse myself sometimes.

i'll get some pictures up of this car. i started to snap some on monday but batteries went flat on the camera so tomorrow is the shoot day with fresh charged batteries

You have got it in one,,even on my late 129 I had to re set those things if ever the battery was taken off,, while we are at it you may as well have the link for all parts on your car,,very handy when doing things your self

The links all open after BM on all pages

thanks for your help Malc, i'm sure the link will also come in very handy.

the car belongs to a customer and has been in the garage now for almost a year if not the full year. the owner was suppose to be sourcing the parts to repair it. i'm simply sick of seeing it now although its a beautifull car to look at, its simply in the way.

i had to weld a patch into the front chassis, fit a full set of brake lines inc flex pipes. the bonnet cable snapped so i just replaced that. i have undersealed the underside completely.

it needs water pump (reason he stopped driving it originally)
it also needs a new rad, 2 front strut tops (rubbers gone hard and cracked)
front o/s wing has perished. so i have to repair and repaint that along with the bonnet and bumper.
the wheels need refurbing,
a few other minor bits and pieces and a damn good valet.
oh MOT.
around £1500+ worth of work in all.

i specialise mainly in Mitsubishi GTO's and evo's but i do work on any car, porsche is another of my specialities. i can offer a club discount on work if you're club requires it? i'm based in Congleton Cheshire. let me know and i can throw a link and contact number if members need somewhere new and reasonably priced to have work done? like a standard fee of £30 ph, club members can get this for £25 ph.

OK I will make a note of where you are for future reference.
Your rates are certainly cheap enough.

I hate it when I have to look after and store something for months on end, more goes wrong with the standing than being used, plus the longer it there the more risk of damage.

Let me know how you get on with the roof

i'll be one happy bunny if it works mate thats for sure, i spent almost all day trying to figure it out. i found the get me out of trouble tool in the boot so i had to manually remove the hard top. only because it leaks somewhere so i may need a set of seals for the roof yet?

If the soft roof does not leak and the hard top does,, all you do is to undo the metal strip under the front edge apply some mastic and just tighten up the screws so the the roof closes without over loading the front pistons

I have the setting up papers somewhere

update....
i done the reset roof programming sequence and failed lol. i even disconnected the battery for 1/2 hour to reset the ecu's and tried again and still no joy. so i guess i need to get it scanned for fault codes. the audible beep is still present. and i might add that the hard top is off at the time of reprogramming does this need to be on? i tried fooling the system by locking the catches down to immitate a roof being there but still no joy.

The wheels was a total mess, most folk would take these for refurbishment. they was heavily oxidised and filthy

but with a little work i ended up with something like this..
DSCF2533.JPG

the car doesn't look too bad now it was a wreck beforehand
DSCF2529.JPG

But i found this under some bad workmanship... the wing has rotten away so now i need to make a new piece and cut the old out weld new metal in..
