I think that the vacuam pipe may have come off the gearbox, this is a common problem.

hi malcolm, i've had a look at the vaccum pipes on the gear box and traced them back. all seem to be ok and in good nick ?

I believe ive finally found the answer to this one. But it will mean replacement parts. On the left hand side of the transmission, looking at the box from the rear, you will see a vacuum box. It has a vacuum pipe on it that goes directly to the intake manifold. Replace this little fellow. Its held by a clamp with two 10 mm bolts so simple to change. However once changed the pressure has to be adjusted and this needs the use of an oil pressure guage. Maybe better you buy the item yourself and get a good indie to replace it. The tiny vacuum box has a small adustment screw under the plastic cover, turn left to reduce pressure and right to increase. pressure should be approx 3.5 bar but varies slightly according to transmission number. Your Transmission should be 722.3 or 722.4 (depends on the year and VIN) which I dont know at this stage. Hope this helps;)

I must add that the above reply is to deal with the jolt when engaging D or R and does not answer your engine rpm problem. That is a different issue. Also brake band B1 may need adjustment, explain this to your indie. B1 and B2 are brake bands in the transmission. An indie would understand.

Next problem is your idle speed, and you did the test I asked you to do, now ask your indie to clean the throttle valve. That should solve this problem.;)
