Has anybody here got experience of these engines, especially the bored out/
larger capacity variants ?

Great engines though a bit lazy. Hydraulic tappets. Tuned versions almost never give the power they're supposed to - it seems there are only a couple of companies which can extract more power consistently. Not a performance engine by a long chalk

As a road engine, the later RR 3.9 units found in the RR with the chain-drive transfer case were really good. The earlier engines don't seem to burn the fuel they use - they just chuck it out the exhaust

They were known for noisy tappets, sometimes one very noisy, the Rover de tuned version was much thirstier than the USA higher output version

Yes I have first hand experience, I first fit a one of these engines in 1984 and ran it for the next 15 years, then built the off road buggy with an injection version and I'm still running it to this day albeit its only the 3.5 version, I also have fit the Roads bleed down lifters to increase the bottom end torque. Many of my friends are now running the 4.6, one of which has a 4.6 the one with out the distributor they have a laptop for reprogramming the ecu to suit offroading.

Kevin PS I think that around 1964 this engine was fit in to racing cars and did actually win twice

I have a 3.5 version in my old Range Rover, seems pretty bomb proof. Mind you it has only done 80k miles. Just regular oil changes, but it gets upset if left out for a long time in the wet. Then the dizzy cap needs wiping out inside, which restores its enthusiasm. (Probably the incorrect word, more like massive lethargy!).

My Griff is on Mobil 1 0-40 iirc. It goes in soon for it's annual in a few weeks. As for tuning, there is a company that can take it out to 5.2l. That'll keep the greenies happy!

RE what grade of oil are you using

I use Valvoline 20/50 Race Oil, very high film strength which increases oil pressure, most suitable for older style engines

Picked up my new toy yesterday 97 P38 4.6 Range Rover! Wallows like my sailing dinghy in a swell at 60mph, though perhaps would bemefit from new
shocks at 98k miles.
I've decided to run her on Valvoline 20/50 and do a oil change every 6k.
It has to be said though that the paint work is far better than the CLK !!
The Benz is starting to develope a mild dose of measels...............to be
attended to.

Anybody here able to interpret 'Cross Bolted Block' ?
