Hi,

I have an SL55 AMG 2003-03.

When driving the car normally all is fine.

After driving the car hard I can hear a metallic rubbing noise from the front left wheel.

I am only able to hear the noise at slow speed and it is linked somehow to the rotation of the wheel as the noise becomes faster and slower with speed.

At first I thought it may be something lodged in the tyre that was rubbing on the road / brakes etc but as it only appears when I drive hard ( and sounds metallic ) I am lost.

A bit vague, I know but does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Toby

Hi Toby,, apart from the AMG bit,I have the same car and set up :D:D All that I can think of is that a pad is sticking when hot, due to expansion on the caliper,,that is about the only thing that could be different from a fast drive

Hi Malcolm,

That makes sense and is also very reassuring.

I had thought it might be something nasty like a warped disc etc.

Thanks again for your help,

Toby

Just out of interest is the noise there all the time?

Its probably a partially siezed pad or something similar.

Its just that the SL is fitted with the SBC braking system, and if its raining the control unit tells the hydraulic unit to apply a slight pressure to the brake calipers to warm the discs, therefore drying the brakes out readying them for optimum use if they are needed.

Best to have it checked out.

If the outer or inner edge of either of a disks working faces is rusted this could be the cause, at 6 years old there is a chance that this is starting to manifest itself.

All the above suggestions ring true as well, the sticky pad is the easiest to check, just remove the pads and see if they are reluctant to slide out of their respective places.
If so a little rubbing of the edges of the pad back plate and cleaning up of the caliper slots may cure it.

The pads will likely need to be removed to inspect the back side of the disk properly.
