I have a strange sound coming from my E220 Estate (2005). When I set off there is a rythmic rubbing (almost thumping sound). It increases in line with the speed then disappears when I reach about 30mph. It is the same regardless of whether the car is cold or warmed up. Appreciate anyones thoughts on this.

Thudding

Mine has started something that sounds the same, and its coming from the front nearside wheel, and its an E220. I've phoned the mechanic and he thinks its either something wrong with the tyre, the ball joint or the bushes. Its going in tomorow to let him look/bang/push/pull and tell me what it is.

I had an inspection flap for the fog lights that annoyed me for a while.

A big one
Ooh - mine's doing this too, up to about 50mph. I'm pretty sure it's from the o/s/f corner, and sounds like a wheel bearing.

However, my car (which I've had just over a week) has different tyres on each corner including a mud+snow tyre on the o/s/r, so it could be that. Time for some new tyres, which may solve this problem.

I had this on one of my cars, it proved to be worn down tyres making the thumping noise.

Thanks for all your replies so far, much appreciated. My front tyres are just about on the legal limit and are due for replacement, maybe they have also worn unevenly. I'll get new ones fitted this week and report back.

thumping noise

I had what sounds like a similar problem at 20-40 mph and thumping through body on corners. above 40 disapeared and no steering wobble

it turned out to be a flat spot on the wheel rim ( those damned pot holes !) - 6mm flat. the wheel repair man pushed it out to 1 mm.

The noise continued so wheel man checked again 3000 miles later, when wheel was removed you could see a flat area that on the tyre where rim had been flat and increased localised wear in that area.

Should disapear when tyres are changed i was told - i recomend looking on the inside of the rim as the flat spots are easy to see before sending it to the specialist
