Running problems 1982 500sl

Hi everyone

I have now managed to get my 107 500sl running. When I first heard it fire it was music to my ears. It hasn't run for two and a half years.
I changed fuel filter,oil and filter, coolant, distributor, rotor arm and also water pump because this was leaking. I also had to redo timing because I took distributor off.
Now I have a problem or two!
Firstly it starts first time everytime and idles lovelly, I drove it around corner for about five mins put foot down and it died on me. Tried starting it it takes ten seconds then starts sometimes cuts out straight away other times you can drive it fot a very short while then the same thing happens just dies.
I haven't used a strobe for timing just put it roughly back where I had marked it when I released ditributor. Could this be the cause?
Also i never changed plugs.
When car is started it sounds like there is a slight hissing noise as if a plug may be leaking or perhaps rocker gasket but there is no obviouse sign of anything.
One last thing wipers aren't working either, any ideas?

Could it be drawing in excess air through a perished pipe etc?

you need to have the timing set up first before you can start to diagnose any other faults with the engine + new plugs is a good idea also check the condition of the HT leads & vacuum pipes
