Well decided to bite the bullet and book the car in

Got a quote today from a small back street guy, typical small dingy premisis, but guy knows his stuff.

To be honest i tried 3 other bigger places and they all said they would get in touch and never did, to be honest i think these days all the big guys are interested in is insurance work, fecking rip off merchants.

Sorry about that!! :D

Anyway getting

New offside front wing (not MB)
Bonnet respray rust attended too
Rear hatch respray rust attended too above plate.
Nearside rear door resprayed rust attended too
Nearside rear arch rust attended too and respray.

I know not an MB wing but really its not worth it, the guy will spray both sides, underseal the inside etc. £70 for a pattern wing and £200 for the MB one. Besided MB dont exactly fill me with confidence when it comes to quality bodywork, so there you go.

Car will be in for 4 days.

So how much do you recon then? Go on take a guess its Christmas :D

The mind boggles as to how these early W210s rust so badly! My w123 isn't even that bad! My lovely new w124 is pretty good too :)

Nice cash deal though mate, I have several 'cash trade accounts' with local trade factors.

Cash rules!

I know, but at least it means they are cheap to buy, a wee bit of tlc should keep it in good nick for another few years. £500 every ew years is not the end of the world if the rest of the car is up to the job.

I have spoken to two very good mechanics one MB the other Porsche and both have said the 300 TD engine is the pick of the bunch in terms of reliability. Ok is a tad noisier and not quite got the punch of the cdi but its a very good engine.

im getting the rust on my late 97 s210 sorted in the next couple of weeks also. After reading posts on the this forum & others, it seems the s210's have a real penchant for rust around the number plate area. I'll stick up a few picks in the next days of the before.

Did you not try to get the bodywork done under MB 30 year warranty?

No point.

Not worth the hassle, anyway i dont rate the bodyshops that MB use and their quality for warranty work given what the get paid, they have to keep things very tight.

I bugeted on £1000 worth of work, so looking at this as the first stage with maybe another £500 in a year or two.

Once the better weather comes in i will give the car a proper valet, i use Zymol Vintage wax on my cars, so once a few coats of that is on im sure the paint will come up much better. Just need 15+ deg temps

Well my 99 210 Estate is currently in MB Manchester having four new doors, both front wings, bonnet, tailgate and rear wheel arches done under warranty

I would give your MB dealer a try, I am glad I did. The body shop manager assured me that they now fit new panels and give a generous coating of waxoyl.

TBH I won't keep the car much more than a couple more years, and I don't fancy forking out at least a couple of grand to get mine sorted.

Not quite the answer for someone who is trying to save you £1500!

Anyway - he's right. I had my 210 sorted by the local dealer up here. FOC and a perfect job done each time. Sure some dealers may have dodgy bodyshops, but most use reputable ones and in any case, just give it the once over and reject if not up to scratch.

On Hibbo's comment about 123's. I seem to remember my Dad's 1980 W123 being in a pretty sorry state by the time he moved it on in 1985. Rust bubbling up from under the rubbing strips, especially on the front wing edges. He later got a 1983 W123 which was still in perfect nick when he moved that on in 1992 so as with todays - some are good, some are not.
